The Isle of Man was under Norse rule since the late 8th century AD, and construction of the castle is believed to have started around the reign of the last Norse kings of Mann in the 13th century. The castle guards the entrance to the Silverburn River, and would originally have consisted of a central square stone tower or keep. The castle was developed by successive kings of Mann between the 13th and 16th century, and towers to the east, west and south were added along with gatehouses and a curtain wall.
