To get to Spirit Island, you need to take a boat along Maligne Lake, which is in Jasper National Park, Alberta. It's a remote spot, but absolutely delightful. I love the colour of the water, the collection of trees on Spirit Island, the distant mountains, well everything I suppose. I hope you enjoy it too.

The sheer joy of driving down the Icefields Parkway, with a view of a Canadian passing you and speeding off into the distance towards some of the most amazing scenery you'll ever see.

As per usual, our trip up the Icefields Parkway on this day in early November took much longer than originally planned, so we didn't make it to Sunwapta Falls until blue hour had begun to settle on the landscape. And you know what? I reckon that's ok, since it made the already blue-and-white landscape that much deeper in colour.

While Athabasca Falls may not be the tallest waterfall I’ve ever seen, it was one of the more powerful. Here, the Athabasca River, which had seemed so calm upstream, raged through a canyon much narrower than the river had been, creating a massive din and spray that got all over my camera no matter what angle I tried to shoot from. Fortunately, there were a lot of angles to choose from — either side of the falls or from the bridge between them — because otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to get my camera wedged in between the tourists (myself included) that flock to the Canadian Rockies in July and August. Looking back down the valley along the walk to Mount Edith Cavell and the Angel Glacier. The walkway to the left, down the valley itself, was closed in 2012 after a large landslide was triggered from 60% of the Ghost Glacier collapsing into the glacier lake below, making this path the only one up to the glacier.

The skies above Medicine Lake lighting up in cotton candy pink early on a brisk morning in October. I was lucky to have such a perfect reflection as the lake was definitely beginning to freeze!

In early November, my friend and I went out to shoot sunrise on the shores of Lake Edith on a brisk, -24ºC morning. We had to keep ourselves moving so we didn't freeze on the spot, but I found this spot fascinating enough that I stayed for quite a while. Yes, there was steam rising in the distance (where the lake was still not quite frozen) and a colourful sunrise, but this natural ice sculpture is what grabbed my attention. It's amazing that something like this can form from just a small pile of sticks (especially since there was nothing inside the top part of the spiral except for ice).

Athabasca Falls is a hugely popular summer destination, with its intense falls crashing into the gorge and leaving visitors in awe. While the falls were barely running when we visited in early March, I found the contrasts of winter just as impressive; the dark walls of the gorge against the pale blue skies above, and the deep aquamarine of the water with the white blanket of snow surrounding it. It's a place I will stop at time and again, no matter what time of year it is.

Even in the -20º temperatures of a March morning in Jasper, the Athabasca River was flowing freely, the ice floating in its current just obscuring the reflections of the national park's mountains beyond.

This little guy had clearly spotted me but wasn't worried enough to stop eating his meal before skittering off!

Pyramid Island in Pyramid Lake, with Pyramid Mountain above...and all of it reflected again below! I'm not sure if there are enough landforms in Jasper named after pyramids...

The rocks of the gorge at Athabasca Falls are fascinating. Not only are they stunning colours, but the shapes betray how years and years of water movement have shaped the entirety of the gorge.

When I saw that the skies were staying clear, I headed out for a bit of night photography -- after all, what else should I have done on the last day of the Jasper Dark Sky Festival? I was pretty happy with my shots while I was there -- and even happier when I got home and realised I'd captured a bit of aurora without even noticing. Truly an accidental aurora! We thought we'd missed sunset as we drove out to Patricia Lake from Jasper to scout out possible places to watch the northern lights. Luckily, we were very wrong!

Visiting Jasper in early November was interesting; all of the lakes were just on the verge of freezing in the -20ºC, and the steam they'd produced had surrounded lakes such as Pyramid Lake with a gorgeous coat of hoarfrost. The one holdout was Patricia Lake, pictured here. Unlike Pyramid, less than 2km down the road, there was hardly any ice around this lake, and no snow whatsoever. It just added to what ended up being a day full of contrasts!

Sometimes a photo just tickles your fancy. This is one of them. I captured this image as we were driving through Jasper National Park along the Yellowhead Highway and I didn't notice the clouds at the time. Now, all I can see when I look at this image is a thought bubble above the summit of the middle mountain! I wonder what the mountain was thinking?

A week before the Jasper SkyTram closed for the season and there was already plenty of snow at the top! What we anticipated to be a fairly short trip up turned into a full afternoon of walking around on the top of Mount Whistlers, enjoying the crunch of snow under our feet and the epic views all around us.
