Description: Knut Hamsun (1859-1952), a Norwegian writer, was awarded Nobel Prize in Literature in 1920. grew up in poverty in Nordland. Earned his livelihood as a road worker, a stonemason, a junior teacher, and a tram driver while traveling America. The novel Sult (1890) [Hunger] and Pan (1894) led to Hamsun’s literary breakthrough and Sult is regarded as the first genuinely modern novel in Norwegian literature.
