La Brea Tar Pits Pillows
Description: The La Brea Tar Pits are a group of tar pits around which Hancock Park was formed in urban Los Angeles. Natural asphalt (or tar brea in Spanish) has seeped up from the ground in this area for tens of thousands of years. The tar is often covered with dust, leaves, or water, which made it a natural trap for animals of all kinds, including humans. Over many centuries, the tar preserved the bones of animals that became trapped. La Brea Tar Pits is a registered National Natural Landmark and the on-site museum is dedicated to researching the tar pits and displaying specimens found there.

Description: The fossils were exhumed from around a hundred wells inside the park. Work began at the beginning of the 20th century. In the 1940s and 1950s, the public was very fond of the unearthed fossils of mammals. In the 2000s, attention focused on insect and plant microfossils such as spores and pollen. These microfossils make it possible to reconstruct the paleoclimates and paleoenvironments of the Los Angeles Basin from the Pleistocene and in particular during the last glaciation.

Description: Big Bone Lick State Park, located in Kentucky’s North River Region, is a historic site known for its prehistoric fossils and natural salt lick. The park’s name originates from the salt-rich soil, which attracted animals for centuries, including mastodons and other Ice Age creatures. However, the swampy terrain led many to their demise, similar to California’s La Brea Tar Pits. European explorers in the mid-1700s were astonished by the massive bones protruding from the ground, marking the site as a key location for American vertebrate paleontology
