Old Main at Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois, completed in 1857. In 1858, Old Main was host to the fifth of seven debates between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas in their senatorial contest. It is the only extant site of those debates, and has been designated as a National Historic Landmark. For a fascinating account of the architectural significance of Old Main, please see Prof. R. This is an image of the wooden stairs leading to the top of the Old Point Loma Lighthouse in San Diego. The original Point Loma Lighthouse is a historic lighthouse located on the Point Loma peninsula at the mouth of San Diego Bay, and is situated in the Cabrillo National Monument. It is no longer in operation as a lighthouse but is open to the public as a museum. It is sometimes erroneously called the "Old Spanish Lighthouse, but in fact it was not built during San Diego's Spanish or Mexican eras (was built in 1855 by the United States government after California's admission as a state). This is an image of the main gate leading to the Eglise Du Dome in Paris. It is part of a building complex known as Les Invalides, which consists of museums and monuments related to the military history of France. Some argue that this is the most recognizable and well-known part of Les Invalides. The building is a gold-domed building now used as a burial site for a number of the country's war heroes, including Napoleon. The dome itself is 107 meters high (or about 350 ft), making it one of the tallest monuments in Paris. It was centrally placed in order to dominate the court of honor, one of 15 courtyards at the complex, designed for military parades. Images of the interior coming soon.
