One of the finest moated manor houses in England, nestling in a lovely setting, boasting excellent period gardens. The house has been described as 'the perfect late medieval manor house', and it is not hard to see why. The manor occupies an island hemmed in on all sides by a wide moat, where swans float peacefully. There are three ranges, or wings of the manor arranged around a lovely courtyard garden. At one time there was a fourth side on the west, making a square, but the west range was demolished in the 18th century. The house is approached over a two-arched bridge leading to an imposing gatehouse with a large Elizabethan window above the entrance. Bishop's Palace Moat, Wells Number of views as of 9th May 2018 = 525. The Bishop's Palace in Wells (Somerset, England) has been the home of the Bishops of Bath and Wells for over 800 years. A Grade 1 listed building, the building of the palace began in the year 1210 AD on land adjoining the city's cathedral. The walls, gatehouse and moat were added in the 14th century. Originally, the palace was surrounded by a medieval deer park. Much of the palace is now open to the public as a tourist attraction, and is well worth a visit. Date: 12th July 2015.

His son, Sir William Herbert, a Knight of the Garter, continued building, creating a home rather than a fortress - though it looks formidable! Looking over the moat to Caerphilly Castle (Castell Caerffili in Welsh) situated in the centre of the County Borough of Caerphilly, South Wales. The image was captured during a late September afternoon after heavy rain showers. Built in the late 13th century by Gilbert de Clare in order to secure this part of Wales from being taken over by the Welsh leader Llewellyn, building was begun in 1268 and it was immediately attacked! Building was then recommenced in 1271 and now It is the largest castle in ground area in Wales! Its surrounding moat and lakes these days are a haven for wildlife rather than for defence!

It is surrounded by defensive lakes which form the moat. At the end of the C15th and into the C16th it fell into decline. However, the Marquesses of Bute acquired the castle in the C18th and gradually restoration began. This image was captured one afternoon in early March during a stormy period of weather. Warkworth Castle is a ruined medieval building, occupying a loop in the River Coquet in Northumberland. The castle was built in the mid 12th century in a charter between the years 1157 and 1164. This image shows the Grey Mares Tail Tower leading to the castle keep, from the river bank at Amble on a bright September morning.
