Description: The pressure suit used in the Mercury program was developed from the U.S. Navy MK-IV full pressure suit manufactured by the B.F. Goodrich Co. This basic suit was selected by NASA in July 1959 for use in Project Mercury after an extensive evaluation program. Many design changes were made to the suit during the course of the Mercury program.
Description: Mercury-Atlas 6 (MA-6) was the first crewed American orbital spaceflight, which took place on February 20, 1962. Piloted by astronaut John Glenn and operated by NASA as part of Project Mercury, it was the fifth human spaceflight, preceded by Soviet orbital flights Vostok 1 and 2 and American sub-orbital flights Mercury-Redstone 3 and 4. They were portrayed in the book and film Hidden Figures. The smoke from the rocket is made up of actual equations from one of computer Katherine Johnson's technical reports. The rocket is the Atlas LV-3B carrying the Mercury capsule Friendship 7 with John Glenn in 1962.
