Saint Mary's Island, off the North East coast at Whitley Bay, owes its name to the religious community that inhabited the island in medieval times when there was a chapel on the island. The remains of the chapel were destroyed when the lighthouse and cottages on St. Mary's Island were built in 1898. St.Mary's Lighthouse is now a grade II listed building and open to visitors at low tide when the causeway to the island can be crossed.
