Neskowin, Oregon is a little known town located just north of Lincoln City. It was originally referred to by local natives as Nestugga (or Nestucca) called "Woods," the area was eventually abandoned. Neskowin as it became known means plenty of fish; reports in the early 20th century note that the waters were black because of the abundance. Settlers eventually came in 1886, when a sailing vessel filled with wheat and lumber ran aground. It remains to this day a quiet spot on the coast, largely unchanged since the early 70's. This design is a subtle reminder of where Neskowin is located.

A personal favorite and an iconic image of summer: a sun-drenched field of oxeye daisies at one of the oldest public gardens in Metro Vancouver.

Sanderlings are tiny -- and surprisingly, quite approachable -- migratory shorebirds that can be easily found at Vancouver beaches in the coldest winter months.

The rounder the bird, the cuter it is! This adult songbird was all fluffed up for the sub-zero temperatures that hit Metro Vancouver during the 2018 Great Backyard Bird Count weekend. Taken at the dyke entrance to Boundary Bay Regional Park in Tsawwassen, British Columbia, Canada.

When David J. Heerensperger took over the Pay 'N Pak, it was an eight-year-old, $15 million-a-year company. By the time the reins were passed to his successor 20 years later in 1989, he had grown Pay 'N Pak to a $400 million-a-year company. Instead of simply retiring, Heerensperger decided to start over. Just two months after resigning from Pay 'N Pak, he incorporated his new company, calling it Eagle Hardware & Garden, resurrecting the name of the hardware store he founded in Spokane in 1959. With a motto of "More of Everything," Eagle's stores were bigger than the competition, averaging 120k square feet. Heerensperger grew Eagle rapidly, taking the company public inside of two years, and by 1995, was a $650 million-a-year company.

Anyone who has lived in western Washington knows that water parks aren't exactly compatible with the weather, and having one open for the few months that you *may* have warm enough temps to enjoy them isn't really economically viable. While that may be the case, that didn't stop developers from building one in Issaquah, Washington back in 1984. Located at the south end of Lake Sammamish and just off I-90 in an area that is now just one ginormous business park, Waterworks Park claimed to offer more than a mile of waterslides. Built on a massive pile of excavated earth from the Mount Baker Tunnel project in Seattle, the park was sitting on an artificial mountain on land that would all too soon be too valuable, leading to its closure in 1988.

The Seattle Rainiers, originally named the Seattle Indians and also known as the Seattle Angels, were a Minor League Baseball team in Seattle, Washington, that played in the Pacific Coast League from 1903 to 1906 and 1919 to 1968. They were initially named for the indigenous Native American population of the Pacific Northwest, and changed their name after being acquired by the Rainier Brewing Company, which was in turn named for nearby Mount Rainier.

Initial logging enterprises in mid-1800s Washington State existed to supply timber to California’s Gold Rush and the population growth it precipitated. But when the Northern Pacific railroad opened a direct rail link over the Cascades to Tacoma in 1887, and with Wisconsin and Minnesota already grossly depleted by deforestation, Washington and the Pacific Northwest quickly assumed the role of primary timber supplier to the nation, ensuring the region’s rapid development as it entered the 20th century and 'Washington's toothpicks' became an increasingly common sight as loggers hauled them down the highways and byways.

The Portland Mavericks were an independent professional baseball team based in Portland, Oregon. They began play in the short-season Class A Northwest League in 1973, after the Portland Beavers of the Pacific Coast League left after the 1972 season and became the Spokane Indians. The Mavericks operated as an independent club in Portland for five seasons, until the return of the PCL in 1978, and played home games on artificial turf at Civic Stadium in Portland.

Of the 40 or so Dark-Eyed Juncos who visit the backyard in the fall and winter, there is the odd nonconformist -- in this case, a Cassiar Dark-Eyed Junco -- an intergrade Slate-Colored X Oregon. Slate-Coloreds are common in the east and the Oregons are the "de factos" Juncos out west -- so this hybrid (perched on the pear tree, keeping warm on our first snowy winter day!) was probably the result of a mating between both species where their breeding ranges overlapped.
