Painted Hills are located in the mid-eastern section of Oregon, and are one of three geological units of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, located about 9 miles (14 km) northwest of Mitchell, Oregon. They are listed as one of the Seven Wonders of Oregon. The Painted Hills are named after the colorful layers of its hills corresponding to various geological eras, formed when the area was an ancient river floodplain. I'm told (and have seen) that the colours of the hills change depending on the time of day and the type of lighting throughout any given day. Commissioned and installed as a surprise 40th birthday present for Richard from his husband Raphael, both good friends of mine, this fanlight features portraits of their two cats, Hira and Karma, both very important members of the household. The artwork sits above the front door to their charming Surry Hills terrace house. I also have close-ups of Hira and Karma here on the Bubble.
