It inhabits swift, clear-water headwater streams and medium-sized rivers with fast rapids, high oxygen, and intact forest borders. It feeds on fruits, seeds, plant matter, insects and sometimes small fish and crustaceans. It can reach a maximum length of 51 cm (20 inches).
