Kay is perhaps the most maligned member of Arthur's retinue after Mordred, but in the earliest versions of the story, he is a capable warrior & loyal vassal. The main trait that follows him throughout the stories is a very sharp tongue.

As a new monarch, Arthur had to fight hard to earn the acceptance of the surrounding kings & to protect his land
