Philosopher Pillows
Description: Seneca was one of the stoic philosophers in ancient Rome. Despite sexist remarks made in much of his writing, this statement was sincere given that a personal experience in his life inspired it. He had an aunt whose husband had recently passed away overseas and she was taxed with the duty of bringing his body home for proper burial. She endured violent storms on the ship in addition to a shipwreck which took a great toll on her health and wellbeing. Still, after all was said and done she managed to complete the task. These words are a tribute to her and her efforts, in part. Generally speaking, they still ring true today.

Description: A single glowing WHY? branches into three dead ends: an infinite regress, a circle and a wall of dogma. Can any belief ever be completely justified? Every reason needs a reason. Either the chain goes on forever, or it circles back on itself, or it stops at an unjustified assumption. The sceptic concludes: suspend judgement. Source: Agrippa the Sceptic, 1st c., reported by Sextus Empiricus, after Pyrrho of Elis.

Description: Philosophy - The Ship of Theseus is a paradox and common thought experiment about whether an object is the same object after having all of its original components replaced with others over time. In Greek mythology, Theseus, the mythical king of the city of Athens, rescued the children of Athens from King Minos after slaying the Minotaur and then escaped onto a ship going to Delos. Each year, the Athenians would commemorate this by taking the craft on a pilgrimage to Delos to honour Apollo. Over time its timbers rotted and were replaced. A question was raised by ancient philosophers: If no pieces of the original remained in the current ship, was it still the Ship of Theseus?
Description: Three overlapping circles of truth, belief and justification meet around a K, beside a stopped clock that is right by luck. Is knowledge just a true belief that you have good reason to hold? You glance at a clock that reads two o'clock, and it is two o'clock. Your belief is true and justified, yet the clock stopped yesterday. Gettier showed that lucky truth is not knowledge. Source: Plato, Theaetetus, Edmund Gettier, Is Justified True Belief Knowledge?, 1963.
Description: Hannah Arendt was one of the most influential philosophers and political theorists of the 20th century. The title of this design is the title of her most popular book that was written not just from knowledge but from experience. Before coming to America, this German of Jewish descent had been imprisoned by the gestapo for her research into antisemitism. She correctly discerned that Stalin and Hitler had one major thing in common besides cruelty, and that was totalitarianism.
