In 1932, L.J. Skaggs opened PayLess Drug Stores in Tacoma, Washington, which soon expanded across the western United States. Some stores were sold to his brother Samuel "L.S." Olnie Skaggs, along with some colleagues. L.J. Skaggs retained California PayLess Stores, which eventually became part of Thrifty PayLess. The remaining PayLess stores were renamed Skaggs Drug Stores in 1948, and Skaggs Drug Centers in 1965. The chain grew through both acquisition and internal expansion. By 1984, PayLess Drug Stores was the largest independently owned and operated drug store chain in the United States. In 1986, there were 225 PayLess stores, and by 1990, PayLess operated in nine western states before being acquired by a larger national chain.

Zesto’s opened their doors in 1952 across the street from Seattle's Ballard High School, and quickly became a favorite place for students to grab a bite and hang out. This classic burger joint featured a menu of burgers and fries, as well as shakes and sodas, and served them up for over 60 years. In the late '80s, Zesto's upped their landmark game by hoisting a '57 Bel Air onto the roof, a move that quickly eclipsed the actual name of the restaurant as people identified it as 'that classic car burger place.'

Bear and Salmon. I almost called this one Bear and Puffin Fishing - note the puffin on Bear's foreleg. This color scheme works best on dark shirts.

Rain City Video opened its doors in Seattle's eclectic Ballard neighborhood in 1988, serving the city for nearly 30 years before calling it quits. With a collection that approached 40,000 titles, Rain City had more to offer than the Blockbuster stores of years gone by and certainly more than any streaming service, making them a true gem for lovers of movies and TV. Stocking everything from big name flicks to obscure indy productions, Rain City Video had something for everyone across their three Seattle locations, truly living up to their 'never a cloudy day' mantra.

The venue that would become known as Natacha's originally opened their doors as Perl's Ballroom back in 1934. From a large wooded lot off of Arsenal Way in Bremerton, Washington, Perl's hosted blues and rock n roll acts from across the country nightly for decades. In 1971, Perl sold her business to Bill Sesko, who renamed the establishment for his wife, Natacha. The venue continued to host rock acts throughout the '70s, but in the '80s Natacha's became a popular spot for punk, hardcore, and metal bands. This was turned up to 11 in the mid '80s when Seattle implemented the TDO (Teen Dance Ordinance) which all but made it illegal to host all ages shows in the city, so many shows were now a ferry ride away in Bremerton at Natacha's.

Vintage Clark's Round the Clock Restaurant Seattle Clark's Round the Clock Cafe was located at 1001 Olive Way in Seattle. Round the Clock was one of 53 restaurants in Walter Clark's Seattle restaurant chain. He opened his first restaurant in 1930. "Clark was noted for serving good food at an affordable price. In the 1940s, he stuck with 5-cent coffee long after many competitors raised the price. He put on a $1.50 Thanksgiving dinner in 1942 and had customers standing in line. ``We didn't make much money on each customer, but we sure had a lot of customers,'' Clark once recalled."

Not a whole lot is known about the Bremerton Rollerdrome, other than it opened up in 1951, and was apparently pretty popular, as this old school roller skating rink was in business for about twenty years. Why the penguin? Some say the rink was originally built in the '40s as an ice skating rink, and as roller skating gained in popularity, the facility dumped the ice in favor of hard wood skating surfaces.

Randy's Restaurant was a kitschy 24-hour restaurant in Tukwila, Washington with an aeronautical theme that served up classic American diner food for 40 years before closing their doors for good. Whether you were a pilot, engineer, or just visiting the museum of flight, Randy's was the go-to spot for breakfast any time of the day, any time of the year. With countless aircraft models hanging from the ceiling and artifacts donated by commercial and military pilots who frequented the establishment, the place was filled with eye candy that was almost as good as the food.

The Seattle SuperSonics, commonly known as the Sonics, were a professional basketball team based in Seattle, Washington. The SuperSonics played in the National Basketball Association as a member club of the league's Western Conference Pacific and Northwest divisions from 1967 until 2008. The SuperSonics won the championship in 1979 and overall, the franchise won three Western Conference titles: 1978, 1979, and 1996. The franchise also won six divisional titles, their last being in 2005, with five in the Pacific Division and one in the Northwest Division. After the 2007–08 season ended, the team relocated to Oklahoma to play under a new name.

My idea for the Seattle NHL Team, prior to the Kraken being adopted. Inspired by a Mammoth tusk found in a construction site in South lake Union, and Seattle's most infamous personality trait.

The beauty of the border between Oregon and Washington states lies in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. Full of hiking and camping and all sorts of river recreation activities like boating, fihsing, and kite surfing, this public land gem is a must see if in the Northwest!

With big sliding windows by the sidewalk along Lake Washington Blvd., Hector’s was a perfect summer hangout. During football season, it was one of the best places to rub shoulders with Seahawk players enjoying signature dishes such as Hobo Eggs, clam chowder and gourmet hamburgers. Randomly named after a former partner’s daughter’s ex-husband, Hector’s was the kind of place that still made their own salad dressings and hand chopped the salad vegetables, and it showed. Kirkland changed a lot over the years since Hector’s opened their doors in 1975, but their reputation for quality never wavered, not even once.
