Excavations have revealed a Roman past and, as of 2004, the oldest human site in Scotland. It was the birthplace of the Scottish economist John Law. We have had so much rain this year that the trees and shrubbery are a verdant green; branches are very full and overhanging the river. An aerial shot of Newbridge, a dormitory suburb of Edinburgh, Scotland. These days the village is surrounded by industry. To the right and slighly below the centre line you can see the New Bridge over the River Almond that the village is named after. At the top of the shot you can see the impressive Almond Viaduct with 36 arches of 50 foot span, averaging 70 foot in height. The viaduct, built between 1838 and 1842, is considered to be one of the finest stone railway viaducts in Britain. The viaduct carries the Edinburgh to Glasgow railway.

The Camps Viaduct (built 1820) in Almondell and Calderwood Country Park, West Lothian, Scotland. Closed about 1960, the Viaduct used to carry the line from the Shale Oil works at Pumpherston to the North British Railway at Camps. Cramond Island has WW II fortifications and is linked to land by a causeway with a line of concrete pylons on one side, constructed as a submarine defence boom.
