Riverside Pillows

A section of the riverside footpath along the River Wensum in the White Friars part of Norwich, Norfolk. The historic White Friars Bridge (also known as St James' Bridge) crosses the river and the far bank has been developed and now includes affluent flats and apartments.

Oars propped up and ready on a landing stage at Henley-on-Thames in Oxfordshire. This could be called the 'home of rowing' as it is here each july that the world-famous Henley Royal Regatta takes place. This image was captured as preparations for the event were in progress. The races are run between Temple Island and a finishiung line just downstream of Henley Bridge - a distance of 1 mile 550 yards. A small wooden holiday rental on the bank of the River Bure in the Norfolk Broads National Park. This small and basic holiday let is nestled out of the way in a quiet and peaceful location among the reed beds in the Norfolk countryside.

Looking across the River Thames at Lechlade in Gloucestershire, towards the parish church of St Lawrence. This picturesque market town, at the southernmost tip of the Cotswolds, is also the highest navigable point on the Thames. Further west and it becomes increasingly narrower and shallower. St John's Lock just down river from here is the first (or last if you're travelling westward) on the Thames. This is a digital art image with added textures.

A scene captured in the village of Bosham (pronounced 'Bozzum') in West Sussex. Here the river flows between old houses to meet the sea by the quay. This image has been given a textured, pencil drawing finish. Bosham has its roots in history. King Canute is reputed to have had a palace near here and it might have been at Bosham that he commnded the sea to go back. It also appears on the Bayeux Tapestry showing the meeting of Harold Godwinson and Edward the Confessor prior to a meeting with William of Normandy.The upshot of this was, of course, the Battle of Hastings and the Norman conquest of Britain. Looking upstream from the road bridge to Goring over the River Thames at Streatley. On the left are the newly refurbished buildings of the Swan Hotel. Its origins date from the C17th when it was apparently opened by the first owner, Francis Swan. In 1970 it was famously bought by Danny La Rue. The present owners have recently extensively refurbished it. The Thames path skirts the hotel before continuing along the river bank to Cleeve Lock and on to Wallingford.

The approach to Day's Lock on the River Thames at Little Wittenham in Oxfordshire. This is the view from the footbridge once well known for the annual Pooh Sticks Championships! Turn right here and we reach Dorchester-on-Thames with its abbey church and buildings. Following the Thames Path over the lock and weir we eventually reach the town of Abingdon, Day's Lock is apparently named after a local Catholic yeoman in the 17th century.The image has been given a textured finish as a pencil drawing

A red boat moored in a quiet backwater of the River Thames at Goring in Oxfordshire. In the background is Mill Cottage, once the riverside home of the singer George Michael. It lies next to the old mill, the waters here once forming its tail race as they flow back to the main river just behind us.

Boats moored on the Thames riverbank at Cookham in Berkshire. This is part of the Thames Path, a long distance trail which follows the river all the way from Cricklade in the Cotswold Hills to the Thames Barrier in Greenwich, London. Cookham, on the banks of the Thames is a village lying in the furthest north-east corner of Berkshire. Here the artist Sir Stanley Spencer lived and painted, many of his works of art being set in the environs of this village. He is buried in the churchyard here.

A picturesque boathouse on the banks of the River Thames between Benson and Wallingford in Oxfordshire. Here the river banks are covered in mature trees and plenty of thick undergrowth. But here and there we get glimpses across the river of views such as this. We are standing on the Thames Path, the long distance trail which joins the Thames Barrier in London with the source of the river in the Cotswolds. To our right is the old market town of Wallingford and to our left is the lock at Benson.

A landing stage on the River Thames at Marlow just above the weir and lock. Marlow is a beautiful old Georgian town in Buckinghamshire which sits on the north bank of the Thames. A fine suspension brisge links the town to Berkshire on the southern bank. This stretch of the river is famous for rowing, the club here producing Olympic champions such as Sir Steve Redgrave, Past residents of Marlow have included Jerome K Jerome, Mary Shelley and TS Elliot.

In its original location in the the 19th century it was the biggest fish market in the world. The movement of fish then was limited to licensed porters only. A role dating back to Henry VIII, but this was ended in 2012. An impressionist's view of the scene looking across the River Thames at Wallingford in Oxfordshire. Wallingford is a picturesque market town between Reading and Oxford with the river flowing along its northern side, In medieval times it was extremely important as it was thge site of a major royal castle. It was also only the second town in England to receive a Royal Charter from Henry II in 1155.

Boats moored at the landing stage at Ray Mill Island on the River Thames in Maidenhead on a summer's day. Behind us is the busy and historic Boulters Lock. Ray Mill Island is named after the Ray family who once owned the flour mill just behind where we are standing. The mill stopped producing flour in the 1920s and is now a restaurant. My original photograph has been edited as a coloured pencil drawing.

A view of the historical White Friar’s Bridge crossing the River Wensum in the city of Norwich. White Friar’s Bridge (formerly known as St Martin’s Bridge) dates back to 1925 however there have been bridges here since 1106. This is an impressive bridge that you must see to appreciate it.

Boathouses on the banks of the River Thames at Goring opposite the lock and just upstream from the old mill. Goring is an extremely picturesque village on the north bank of the Thames in Oxfordshire, just across the river from Streatley in Berkshire. Here the river flows through the Goring Gap between the Chiltern Hills in the north and the Berkshire or North Wessex Downs in the south. Goring has been the haunt of artists including JMW Turner. A digital pencil sketch from my original photograph.

A bench by the side of the River Thames near Cookham, Berkshire. A lovely place to sit, rest and watch the river traffic go by! This is the stretch of the river which inspired paintings by the artist Stanley Spencer whose home was in the village. Nearby is a gallery dedicated to his work.

This is as far you can take a river boat on the Thames. The scene is just above Lechlade and the boats moored in the distance cannot go further upstream for here it narrows and becomes shallower as it heads towards Cricklade. Just behind us is the roundhouse which marks the beginning of the now derelict Thames and Severn Canal which once allowed working narrow boats to travel further. In the distance is the spire of St Lawrence's church at Lechlade - a picturesque market town.
