Tower Hill, in Victoria, declared Victoria's first National Park in 1892, was formed at least 30,000 years ago when a hot rising basaltic magma came into contact with the subterranean water table. The violent explosion that followed created the funnel-shaped crater (later filled by a lake) and the islands seen today. Artefacts found in the volcanic ash layers show that Aborigines were living in the area at the time of the eruption. The Warrnambool area was a rich source of foods for the Koroitgundidj people, whose descendants retain special links with this country. Tarra-Bulga National Park in South Gippsland is well known for its giant Mountain Ash trees, beautiful fern gullies and ancient myrtle beeches. The park covers 2015 ha. of some of the best examples of original cool temperate rainforests of the Strzelecki Ranges. Bulga is an Aboriginal word meaning mountain, while Tarra was named after Charlie Tarra, an Aboriginal who guided Strzelecki and his party through Gippsland in 1840. Following recommendations by the Land Conservation Council, the two separate national parks were joined through a land exchange with APM Forests in1986.
