I linger in the stillness of this crescent, memories of yesteryear my only companion. A perfectly symmetrical row of houses, jewels of Georgian design, havens of timeless beauty in the city. A short street, near my grandmother’s old home, a place of shadow and light. The light of an early Scottish evening, soft, as though the flesh of peaches and apricots, turning the stone golden in places, brown in others, like caramel. Mature trees cast their webs of dappled shade, muting the hum of traffic on the Queensferry Road. I loved the play of light, the windows, triangles of dark and colour. This work is a wonderful souvenir of Edinburgh.

This square work depicts architecture in Edinburgh’s New Town, a place I have grown up with, dipping in and out, visits, periods of residence, and in daydreams and memories. Hot, Scottish summers of childhood, tea and buttery scones in venues long gone, errands run, books bought, and buses caught. There is an Athenian timelessness about it, a sense of history and high culture that permeates the sandstone and rock, that whispers from patches of shadow and coolth. Snippets of life, from decades past, and yet Edinburgh remains constant, timeless and beautiful. A great souvenir of Scotland, a perfect gift.

A quiet morning stroll in Edinburgh, as glorious sun captures the tops of the Scottish Baronial buildings. The streets are mine, private, to share only with my shadow and footsteps. I smell freshly ground coffee, baking, the tang of the sea, and the scent of Edinburgh waking up. A distant rumble of traffic, the impatient hoot of a train from beyond the limit of the long since vanished walls. I wanted to capture the way the light and colours play with each other, the brightness of the sky, and the delicious coolth of the street.

A favourite spot of Edinburgh, a row of purple-hued tenements hugging the edge of the Meadows, their shape and colour accentuated by the late afternoon sky, filled with pink swirls, clouds of marshmallow, candy floss and Turkish Delight. The sky and trees remind me of the western fringes of Scotland, where the air is scented with brine and seaweed and pine, a place of magic, of Celtic sorcery. As with most corners of Edinburgh there are jolts of memory too, of student parties decades ago, in large drawing room flats, wooden floors bedecked with threadbare imitation Persian rugs, old armchairs in garret windows with tantalizing views. A special place, laden with memory. I remember coming here as a child, peeking at the marble counters, at the macabre dead fish, their eyes glazed, silent and still. Scottish voices, banter and jokes, packages of brown paper, the smell of fish. Later my mother would cook the orange-coloured fish in milk, served with a poached egg. Little has changed, the floors, the walls, a link to my past. I was struck by the light too, the way it bounced off the wall, angular, cheering.
