Sky Castle Pillows
Description: This is an image of the castle on the tidal island of Lindisfarne (Holy Island), which sits off the coast of Northumberland. The island has had a turbulent past with raids by the Vikings and being in the volatile "Borders" region between England and Scotland. Access to the island is via a causeway that floods twice a day, so you have to time your visit accordingly. The approach to the castle is quite dramatic as the mound upon which it sits is the highest point on an otherwise very flat landscape. We were told that the rocky outcrop was all that remains of a long extinct volcano. But what do you do with a castle when there's no more need for a castle, well you convert it into a very novel home, which is what you see today, as a museum.

Description: When visiting Cesky Krumlov, you need to visit the castle. Much of it is medieval, but it had a renaissance do-over in the 16th century, which has given it a whimsical, fairy tale like look. This image highlights the tower, viewed from within the castle complex, from where it rises dramatically above the red roofs, and is set against a deep blue sky. You got to love it!

Description: This is an image of the courtyard at the western end of the Prague Castle complex. Today, the castle is the official residence of the Czech president, well at least a small portion of it is, as the complex is huge. Apparently, it is the largest ancient castle in the world, going back to the 10th century, with most of it being open to the public, for a fee. I have to say, it didn't feel very castle-like, but did feel very palace-like. When we were there, so were a lot of other visitors, so getting this image required a bit of a wait. I hope the wait was worth it!

The Enchanted Hill has never looked so enchanted.

Description: This is an image of the castle at Cesky Krumlov, a medieval stronghold in what is now the southern most reaches of Czechia. It sits atop a steep hill, which by virtue of its loftiness probably made it quite unassailable. On the other hand, I think it must have been a relatively peaceful place, judging by all the windows. I suspect it was more about wealth and the display thereof. That all aside, what I love about the image is the curve of the buildings around the incredibly deep blue sky.
Description: A silhouette of a medieval castle with pointed spires is viewed through a keyhole shape. In the foreground, a solitary figure with a sword stands on a path with silhouetted trees and flying birds against a vibrant sunset sky with clouds. The overall style is dark and atmospheric.
Description: We had been up to visit the castle in Prague, but upon leaving I turned back to look up at this stunning skyline. It was late afternoon. The sunlight was strong, creating such clear definition of the castle that is a palace, and the elegant spires of St. Vitus Cathedral, which resides within the castle walls. While the Sun still shone brightly, mighty clouds were moving across the sky, providing such a dramatic backdrop this castle on a hill.
