On 11 April 1966, the 92nd MP Battalion was deployed from Fort Bragg to Vietnam to provide command and control, staff planning, criminal investigations and supervison for administration, training, operations and logistics to assigned and attached units. The 327th Infantry Regiment (Bastogne Bulldogs) is an infantry regiment of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) of the United States Army. During World War II, the 327th was a glider-borne regiment of the 101st Airborne Division. It fought during World War I as part of the 82nd Division. It has also been deployed in the Vietnam War, Gulf War, and most recently to Iraq and Afghanistan. The song "Glider Rider" describes (humorously) some of the slights that glider-borne troops felt they received from the Army during World War II; though the regiment's public fame rose with the 1949 movie Battleground about the Siege of Bastogne in late 1944.

In 1962 the L-20 was designated the U-6. The U-6A "Beaver" was manufactured by deHavilland Aircraft of Canada, Ltd. Nearly 1,700 DHC-2 Beavers were built by DeHavilland Canada between 1947 and 1967; of those, about 970 went to the US Army and the US Air Force as U-6As. More than 200 L-20As went into USAF inventory between 1952 and 1960 to be flown in utility transportation and liaison roles. The principal mission of the USAF L-20a was aerial evacuation of litter and ambulatory patients. On 7 October 1965, the 281st Assault Helicopter Company, Airmobile Light was activated at Fort Benning. By 9 June the following year, the newly formed company set up its headquarters inside the 5th SFG compound at Nha Trang Bay, Republic of Vietnam. The unit's mission was to provide air movement of troops, supplies and equipment under the direct supervision of the commanding officer, 5th SFG. The 281st became the first organized special operations helicopter unit in the U.S. Army. Army historians consider the 281st to be the legacy unit for today's 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne), abbreviated as 160th SOAR(A).
