Description: The Immaculate Heart of Mary (Latin: Cor Immaculatum Mariae) is a Roman Catholic devotion which refers to the view of the interior life of Mary, her joys and sorrows, her virtues and hidden perfections, and, above all, her virginal love for God the Father, her maternal love for her son Jesus Christ, and her motherly and compassionate love for all mankind. Traditionally, the Immaculate Heart is depicted pierced with seven swords or wounds, in homage to the seven dolors of Mary and roses, usually red or white, wrapped around the heart.
Description: Catherine Labouré entered the novitiate of the Daughters of Christian Charity of St. Vincent de Paul in Paris in 1830. On the evening of November 27, 1830, Our Lady Mary spoke to Sister Catherine with the words "God wants to entrust you with a mission...". Mary shows Catherine a medal and instructs her to have one minted. From July 30, 1832, the first medals are distributed and handed out to the sick and needy. In the first four years alone, two and a half million were distributed. Due to the healings, conversions and mendings, the medal very soon received the nickname "Miraculous Medal".
