The Good Soldier Švejk by Jaroslav Hašek is the most translated novel of Czech literature. Considering that Czheks gave us such great writers as Milan Kundera or Josef Škvorecký, this is a significant achievement. A simple-minded soldier Švejk is so enthusiastic about serving the Austro-Hungarian Empire that you cannot be sure if he is committing a diversion. The book's appeal is in its typically Czech humor, known to be light but deep.

The famous French poster imploring citizens to pour their gold into the war effort with the purchase of bonds. The poster depicting a German soldier thoroughly stopped in his tracks by the imposing Gallic rooster found on French gold coins from 1899 - 1914. The artist has cleverly changed the date on the coin to 1915 - a year after such coins were produced.

An image of a Brittish Tommy soldier from the First World war that sits proudly on the seafront at Seaham Harbour. In the background is a Lancaster bomber on a fly past. A composite of two images, the Lancaster fly-past is in memory to the British Tommies of the first world war.

In 1915 Georg-Günther Freiherr von Forstner, commander of submarine U-28, saw something unusual off the Irish coast. Shortly after torpedoing the British steamer Iberian, something within the sinking vessel exploded. Along with debris from the doomed Iberian a gigantic marine creature was thrown skywards - an animal which the astounded German captain could only liken to a goliath crocodile, and something that sounds very-much like a prehistoric marine reptile such as the 20 meter-long pliosaur Kronosaurus, which was the wolf of the sea 99 million years before the U-Boat came along. Whether there is any truth in this supposed sighting of a prehistoric monster, it certainly captures the imagination and deserves a teeshirt. And so do you!

The 15th Cavalry Regiment is a cavalry regiment of the United States Army. It was one of the Expansion Units originally established for the Spanish–American War, but has been a general workhorse unit ever since. The 15th Cavalry embarked for the Philippines to quell an insurrection in the United States newly acquired territory. The fierce combat in the Philippine jungles against the savage Moros forged the spirit of the regiment in fire and blood; a spirit exemplified in the motto the regiment chose for itself - Tous pour un, un pour Tous (all for one, one for all).

Vladislav Petkovic Dis (1880-1937) was a symbolist poet who has a reputation as a cursed poet of Serbian literature. He died in World War One on a ship that was torpedoed by a German submarine.

During World War One, Victory Boys and Victory Girls clubs were organized in the US to raise five dollars per child for the United War Work Campaign. The kids were between the age 12 and 20 and received a pin when they turned in a pledge card. They had to work for the pledge and not solicit it from their parents or others, and many exceeded the pledge amounts. This was the first time in U.S. history that children were part of an organization that helped the war effort.

Organized at Camp Logan, Texas, on Aug. 28, 1918. The 43d and 57th Regular Army Infantry Regiments which were stationed at Camp Logan furnished the nucleus for the other infantry units of the division. The divisional artillery was organized at Camp Stanley, Texas, from National Army cavalry and remained at that camp for instruction. The engineer regiment and train was organized at Camp Humphries, Va., and joined the division at Camp Logan in the early part of November. By the 1st of November the organization of the division was about completed and all units were undergoing intensive training. On Dec. 4th the breaking up of the division was begun, when one battalion of the 43d Infantry was sent to Camp Bowie, Texas, and more.

Built out of special corteen steel, it has been installed on Seaham seafront in Country Durham to mark the centenary of the start of the Great War. Created by local artist Ray Lonsdale, the sculpture is also intended to represent Post Traumatic Stress Disorder which many of the returning soldiers endured.

On August 6, 1945, a U.S. B-29 dropped the atomic bomb named 'Little Boy' on Hiroshima. Three days later, a second bomb named 'Fat Man' was dropped on the city of Nagasaki. After the world witnessed the raw power of atomic weapons that ended WWII, humanity stood silent. Calls to ban them began to grow during the Cold War era, and by the 1960s, 'ban the bomb' protests were frequently held throughout the world. These morphed into general calls for peace in the early '70s as the Vietnam War waged on, and designs like this one calling for people to 'get it together' and love one another were a common sight.
