World Penguin Day on April 25 aims to raise awareness about these flightless birds to preserve their species so that future generations get to see these elegant and remarkable creatures. This day coincides with the annual northern migration of Adélie penguins, a pattern that is inherent and conserved across generations. There are eight species native to Antarctica. Most penguins are monogamous and have unique calls to assist them to find their mates in large groups. Most species lay up to two eggs in a season while the King and Emperor penguins lay only one. Alarmingly though, of the 18 known living species, 10 have been listed as endangered.

Many plumbers have saved the day (and, more often, night). They can prevent catastrophe by fixing a toilet or unclogging a drain. What would our lives be without these heroes of indoor plumbing? Don’t laugh. It takes great expertise to really know what goes on in those mazes of pipes and how to keep them all running like clockwork.

On April 22, 1864, the United States Congress passed an act allowing for ‘In God We Trust’ to begin appearing on U.S. coins. From 1864 until 1938 it appeared on various U.S. coins, each for a different duration. It has appeared on the penny since 1909, the dime since 1916, and on all gold coins, silver dollars, half dollars, and quarter-dollar coins since 1908. ‘In God We Trust’ is also the official motto of the United States, and can be found in most federal institutions.

The point of the holiday is to raise awareness about the importance of tuna and tuna-like fish in our ecosystem. They are not just nutrient-rich food sources, but also an integral part of the marine food chain. Due to the heightened demand for tuna for human consumption, the tuna population is being depleted at unsustainable levels. These days highlight the importance of the mindful consumption of sustainably-sourced tuna wherever possible.

Bulldogs, beautiful? Well, yes! French, American, or English — bulldogs portray glamour in their own special way. True — people (as a rule) can’t get away with a lot of slobbering and wrinkles, but bulldogs make it an art form. They started popping up as furry companions in historical literature about five centuries ago. Today this sweet sidekick continually ranks as one of the most popular dog breeds in the U.S. French bulldogs currently sit fourth on the American Kennel Club’s list. (Bulldogs, technically a separate breed, are fifth.)

More romantic than Father’s Day, more serious than National Boyfriend Day, and with less pressure than Valentine’s Day. Also known as National Husband Day or World Husband Day, we love this little-known holiday dedicated to the men in our lives who show up for us in bold and subtle ways every day of the year. Its fun-loving spirit gives us lucky spouses an opportunity to be creative and thoughtful in how we show our appreciation to our partners.

Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia, or C.D.H., is a condition that occurs when the diaphragm — a thin sheet of muscle separating the chest cavity from the abdomen — is not fully developed or has a hole in it. The partial development of the hole causes the organs from the abdomen, like the bowels, stomach, or liver, to move up into the chest cavity. C.D.H. is a lesser-known condition that is quite common throughout the world.

Did you know that Egyptians worshipped garlic as a god—and even used it as currency? That’s not all. Garlic supposedly gave strength to Greek athletes and warriors, warded off the evil eye, and protected maidens from evil nymphs. Not to mention, vampires. (Thanks, Dracula!) Just think about all the garlicky foods we love. There’s garlic bread and garlic fries for starters.

Crawfish are freshwater crustaceans that resemble small lobsters, which they are in fact related to. In certain regions, they are also known as crayfish, crawdads, freshwater lobsters, mountain lobsters, and rock lobsters, among others. In terms of classification, crawfish are members of the superfamilies of Astacoidea and Parastacoidea. Crawfish breathe through gills, which are like feathers. Some crawfish species can be found in brooks and streams where there is a flow of fresh water, while others may thrive in swamps and paddy fields.

Polar Bear Plunge Day on January 1 is not for the faint of heart or the very timid. Ice swimming is for the bold and daring. Plunging into January’s frigid waters is nothing short of the most insane yet invigorating way to celebrate the first day of every new year. Those courageous – some might say foolish – souls who don swim trunks and bikinis to splash their way into icy cold winter waters claim they are ‘freezin’ for a reason’ — usually to raise money for a good cause. Then again, there are polar-bear swimmers who just like the idea of doing something wild and crazy that doesn’t involve alcohol to kick off the New Year.

Chagas disease, a parasitic disease affecting more than six million people worldwide. As many as 300 babies are born with Chagas disease every year. Unfortunately, these babies remain undiagnosed owing to a lack of awareness. If the disease is not treated, people can die, or suffer a heart attack or stroke. Hence it is crucial to educate everyone about the disease so that appropriate measures are taken by the government, members of the community, and healthcare professionals to curb the spread.

On this day, we celebrate dolphins — one of the most intelligent and friendly mammals in the world. Dolphins are cetacean mammals that belong to the same family as whales and porpoises. There have been many representations of dolphins in popular culture through books and films. Most of these popular representations are accurate. Dolphins are extremely social and friendly beings. They love company and have an acute sense of hearing. Yes, they can hear many more frequencies than adult humans. Dolphins can be found in many parts of the world although they prefer shallow waters.
