Coin-shaped symbol representing St. Peter the apostle and first Pope. The upside down cross is not a symbol of anti-Christian sentiment, but rather the sign of the way that Peter died for Our Lord. Tradition says that he chose to be crucified upside down rather than die in the same manner as his Lord, and his sacrifice earned him a martyr's crown. The keys represent the "keys of the Kingdom" which Our Lord gave to Peter as the visible head of the Church. The crowing rooster represents Peter's denial of Our Lord during His passion, but most of all it represents Christ's forgiveness and mercy for all who return to Him.
Sancte Petre, ora pro nobis.

"When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together. And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim."
