Description: The volcanic crater on White Island (Whakāri, off North Island, New Zealand) as it appeared in 2009 - it has has just erupted today (9 December 2019) with as yet not fully determined loss of life. The island has changed dramatically over the last century, the previous eruption being in 1997. This, the only remaining crater, has also changed in shape. There are said to be stepped benches in the crater, much like the bench visible between the foreground and the water line. The colour of the water also changes and has at times been reported to be red. Description: Fort Denison as seen from a passing ferry. The tiny island on which the fort stands was known to the Aboriginal people as Mat-te-wan-ye or Mallee’wonya. It was called Rock Island after the First Fleet arrived in 1788, but came to be known as Pinchgut after the convict Thomas Hill was sentenced to a week on bread and water in irons there. Once a 15 m high sandstone rock, the island was flattened as prisoners under the command of Captain George Barney, the civil engineer for the colony, quarried it for sandstone to construct nearby Circular Quay.
