The species has been spotted 2,500 miles (4,000 kilometers) up the Amazon River in South America and dwell in Lake Nicaragua, a freshwater lake in Central America. It can reach a maximum size of 3.5 m (11 ft).

It is native to the Chao Phraya and Mekong basins in Indochina. Its populations have declined drastically, mainly due to over fishing, and it is now considered critically endangered.
