The origin of the name "Beagle" is unknown, although the common theory is that it comes from the French word "begueule" which means "gate throat" because of their throaty baying. This looks like a miniature foxhound but was mostly used to hunt hare. They have one of the best noses in the canine world and are employed often to scent contraband at international checkpoints, especially agriculture.

Also called the Aberdeen Terrier, the Scottie is one of the five Scottish breeds. The first Earl of Dumbarton nicknamed the breed "the diehard" because of their bravery. They were bred to hunt vermin on farms and in homes. They have a two-layer coat - a dense inner layer and a coarse wiry outer layer which give them their feathered look and handsome beard.

The Scottish Deerhound is one of the giants of the dog world! Standing at an average of 30 inches tall, these rough-coated sighthounds were originally bred by native Scots to take down the wild red deer. Historically, they were known as the Royal Dog of Scotland and have earned a reputation as brave, regal, and noble. They’re an affectionate breed, although they have a strong prey drive so not always recommended for homes with small animals or small places like apartment because of their size. A Scottish Deerhound is happiest running over hill and dale, exhibiting their brilliant physique and noble bearing like the lords they are.

Schnauzer in German means "snout," a reference to the distinguished mustaches these friends sport. They are of above average intelligence for dogs and as a result are known as excellent working dogs. They are traditionally styled with tail docked and ears cropped, although this is illegal in many countries. The practice was taken on to protect them from the rats they hunt on the farm. Without floppy ears, the rats have nothing to grab onto. They are also used as guard dogs and alert the household to invaders by barking.

The Saluki is one of the oldest breeds, perhaps dating as far back as 7000BC. Once known as the Persian Greyhound or the gazelle hound, their sleek beauty and athleticism made them favorites among kings and their ancestors could have been found with Alexander the Great, in the Egyptian royal court, and in middle eastern legend they were said to be a gift from Allah! Salukis are lithe and intelligent and do best in a house with a yard to run in. Inside, their low-fat physique requires soft cushions or sofas. They are also the mascot of the University of Illinois Carbondale!

For many, the first thought people have of the Saint Bernard is of a rescue dog traipsing the Swiss Alps with a flagon of brandy around his neck. This image is not so far from the truth! The Saint Bernard was made famous by the Hospice of St. Bernard Pass who acquired the dogs in the 1660s and used them to help rescue people. They are big, gentle creatures with the strength to pull a cart and hearts of gold.

The Russkiy Toy (Or Russian Toy) is often mistaken for the chihuahua, but these tiny friends were bred from English Toy breeds for Russian royalty. It comes in two coat varieties, the smooth coat and the long-haired coat, and used to be considered two different breeds until they were brought together in 1988 for inclusion into international kennel clubs. Before the 1990s barely anyone outside of Russia even knew about the Russiky Toy! As pets they are friendly and cheerful. It is one of the smallest breeds in the world, weighing between 1 and 3 kg full grown. They are tiny little watchdogs who are loyal to their owners and easily carried in their arms.

Rottweilers are a German breed famed for their size and power. In Germany they call them the "butcher's dog" because they pulled carts full of meat to market. They were bred to help manage livestock, and while they still do that in some parts of the world, they are more likely to be employed as search and rescue dogs, guard dogs, and police dogs.

The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a unique and powerful dog. It was bred in Africa by crossing european hunting dogs including sight and scent hounds with African ridged KhoiKhoi dogs. The native blood made these dogs more resistant to the local pests and illnesses. As a result, the Rhodesian Ridgeback is a powerful dog and relentless hunter, but also a loyal family dog with an affection for children. The first official American breeder of Rhodesian Ridgebacks was none other than Hollywood actor Errol Flynn!

The Redbone Coonhound is an American hunting dog bred to hunt racoons, deer, boar, bear, and cougar. They follow their noses through the woods barking up a storm until they trap the prey and sit quietly and wait for the hunter to show up. Their coats are a deep red, but that is not where they get their name. One of the earliest breeders was a man named Peter Redbone, who lent his name to the breed. The Redbone Coonhound was inducted into the UKC in 1902 but not recognized by the AKC until 2010 despite it being an American breed. Perhaps the most famous Redbone Coonhounds were featured in the novel “Where the Red Fern Grows” which I’m willing to bet made every elementary schooler in the US bawl their eyes out.

The Rat Terrier is just as it says on the tin, a small farm dog bred to keep rats out of barns. They are a very old and common breed, often interbred with small hunting dogs called "feists." They are a small breed with good temperament which has led them to work in many different fields including law enforcement as contraband sniffing dogs, and in the service quarter as hospice, comfort, and assisted living companions.
