Description: The lavender rhino was used as a gay rights symbol in Boston in the 1970’s. The rhino was chosen due to it being a gentle and misunderstood creature that fights ferociously when angered, and the heart represents love and the common humanity of all people. The original symbol lives on in the public domain as a historical symbol, and I put my own twist on it here.
Description: This is a labrys, outlined by a soaring bird, emerging from a waxing moon. The labrys is an old symbol representing lesbian and feminist strength. The moon, shown here in it’s growing phase, is often associated with a woman’s menstrual cycle. The bird could represent freedom, but for the most part it just looks cool.
Description: The inner silhouette is a ceremonial Minoan labrys, an ancient symbol associated with Goddesses. The sharp outer blades is a double-headed axe, celebrating feminist and lesbian strength and independence. The handle intersects the blades to form XX’s which, intersex being an exception, represents the chromosomes of a pair of women. And finally, the outer ring (on some products) is a solid boundary, defining our right to protect our bodies, spaces, and sexuality.
