Watercolors have always been my first love, but in order to support myself with painting, I ventured out long ago into Oils and Acrylics. Feels good to come home. May even offer this as an inspiration painting in a watercolors class next month. Although it's terrifying to teach watercolors, it's very unforgiving, I still want to pass along all I've learned in the medium.

While preparing a collection of paintings based on photos I took spring 2014 in Natchez, Mississippi, I googled "Natchez Pilgrimage Queen Flog." Households where former Pilgrimage Queens reside fly an honored flag. I have several photos of these flags, but not a photo close enough or clear enough to paint it in detail. Well, I didn't find a photo of the flag, but I did find this enchanting black and white photo of Julia Devereaux Hendrix Stone, the 1941 Pilgrimage queen. I'm not a portrait artist, but this photo begged to be painted. Here is #9 in the series.... Natchez Royalty.

This week in Creative Spirits class we are studying the American Impressionists from the Old Lyme, CT, artists colony from the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. This piece is my interpretation of Matilda Browne's lovely painting of Florence Griswold's peony garden.

Study of Paul Gaugin's "Still Life with Peaches"

I'm humbled and honored to be asked to paint the portrait of this family home. The family is moving on to a new home, but it's bittersweet. The father who recently passed away, built the double garage to the side of the house. Praying this painting will bring happy tears and be a small token to remember fondly the years they lived on Oak Valley.
