McAuliffe, a senior US Army Officer who was the acting commander of the 101st Airborne Division during the defense of Bastogne, Belgium, in the Battle of the Bulge. On November 13, 1942, The USS Juneau was struck by a Japanese torpedo while it was near the Solomon Islands, it exploded and sank, taking with the five Sullivan brothers along with the rest of the crew.
