Description: The Library of Alexandria held the knowledge of the ancient world. Hypatia of Alexandria taught it. Mathematician, philosopher, astronomer — the first woman in history documented as a significant contributor to mathematics. This illustration places her at the entrance of the Library, astrolabe in hand, exactly where she spent her life. The rendering captures her authority without theatrics. A figure who belonged in that space completely, surrounded by the geometry and the stars she spent her life mapping. She was the first. That part was never in dispute.
Description: Alexander The Great - Although often misquoted, it is believed the phrase references Plutarch's essay On the Tranquility of Mind, in which part of the essays Moralia states: "Alexander wept when he heard Anaxarchus discourse about an infinite number of worlds, and when his friends inquired what ailed him, "Is it not worthy of tears," he said, "that, when the number of worlds is infinite, we have not yet become lords of a single one?"
