Description: Antarctica Exploration - Roald Amundsen was a Norwegian explorer of the polar regions. He was a key figure of the period known as the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. He was the first man to reach the South Pole, and was a member of the first undisputed expedition to reach the North Pole aboard the airship Norge, which overflew the area in 1926.
Description: The United States Antarctic Research Program (USARP) has operated in Antarctica since 1959, sending teams of scientists down south every Austral Summer to discover new information about the frozen continent. My grandfather was one-such explorer, and he worked in Antarctica throughout the early years of the 1960s. One of the greatest gifts I ever received was his old exploration parka, emblazoned with the logo of the USARP. The logo speaks of adventure, danger and exploration in the most isolated part of the world. They were built on ice that moves very slowly; the relative location on the ice sheet has moved and eventually breaks off into an iceberg. The geographic location has new ice that has shifted to this location and is technically over the open water.

The ship, originally named Polaris, was built at Framnæs shipyard and launched in 1912 from Sandefjord in Norway. After her commissioners could no longer pay the shipyard, the ship was bought by Shackleton in January 1914 for the expedition, which would be her first voyage. A year later, she became trapped in pack ice and finally sank in the Weddell Sea off Antarctica on 21 November 1915. All of the crew survived her sinking and were eventually rescued in 1916 after using the ship's boats to travel to Elephant Island.
