First launched in 1972 with just 13 balloons, the event has grown into a spectacular nine-day celebration featuring mass ascensions where hundreds of colorful balloons rise together at dawn, filling the desert sky against the backdrop of the Sandia Mountains. With its vibrant visuals, crisp autumn weather, and festive atmosphere, the Balloon Fiesta has become one of New Mexico’s most iconic and beloved annual events. This design is about as southwestern and '80s as they come, and is based on the 1988 event.
