20th Special Forces Group – One of two National Guard Special Forces Groups. Headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama, with battalions in Alabama (1st Battalion), Mississippi (2nd Battalion), and Florida (3rd Battalion), with assigned Companies and Detachments in North Carolina ; Chicago; Louisville, Kentucky; Western Massachusetts; and Baltimore. The 20SFGA has an area of responsibility (AOR) covering 32 countries, including Latin America south of Mexico, the waters, territories, and nations in the Caribbean sea, the Gulf of Mexico, and the southwestern Atlantic Ocean. Orientation towards the region is shared with 7SFGA.

In September 1968, the 10th Special Forces Group, minus the 1st Battalion, redeployed to Fort Devens, Massachusetts. The 1st Battalion remained forward deployed in Germany as part of Special Forces Detachment-Europe. In October of that year, after intensive pre-mission training, the unit deployed to Thailand. An SFOB was initially established at Camp Pawai, Lopburi, Thailand. The organization no longer possessed the lineage of its previous designation but shares the lineage and honors of the parent regiment, The 1st Special Forces. In December 1967, the headquarters moved from Camp Pawai.

For a number of years in the late 1960's, Miller Field, Staten Island, New York was home to the headquarters of the Army's 11th Special Forces Group.
