When visiting Bayfield in the autumn, it always an excuse to get out and take some pictures of the fall colours. A short distance from our cottage is Pioneer Park, which overlooks Lake Huron. There's a lovely row of maple trees by the park. It's difficult not to like this image.

This artwork, originally captured on film, depicts the aftermath of the Sun setting over Lake Huron. My vantage point is the beach at Bayfield, Ontario. Sunsets are a bit of a spectator sport in Bayfield. All along the cliffs and beaches that overlook the lake, people gather in the hope of seeing something splendid. It's the clouds that can create the spectacle, especially after the Sun has set. Here, the wispy clouds have turned black against the still vibrant sky, and the pier has become silhouetted against that same sky. The slow but ever-changing interplay of the light with the clouds set against the wonderful deep blue to red-orange gradient that is the sky, continues to provides not one image but a progression of awe.

This image depicts a really delightful house on Main Street in Bayfield. Autumn is settling in, and the leaves are falling. Behind the shadow of the trees, the house is bright.

I often walk past this house and am always enchanted with the way it is framed by the trees that surround it. I think this is a lovely image, and I hope you do too.

I often take a walk to the end of the pier at Bayfield, There's often a group of fishermen there trying their luck. They stand there, chatting with friends, hoping to catch the "big one".

This image, originally captured on film in 1986, depicts the end of a stormy day over Lake Huron. It's close to sunset, but the Sun is only evident through some breaks in the heavy clouds. The pier at Bayfield, Ontario is almost awash with the wind driven waves breaking over it, but the navigation beacon stands proud amidst the turbulence. To me, this image expresses the feeling of 'it's good to be alive'. I hope you get that sense as well.

This image depicts a sailboat leaving the harbour at Bayfield. I remember it being a wonderfully clear day with the wind just starting to pick up.

The slow but ever-changing interplay of the sunlight with the clouds provides not one image but a progression of awe.

Sunsets, who wouldn't want to watch one as glorious as this? Here, the Sun is setting under a flawless sky. The people standing at the end of the pier at the entrance to the harbour at Bayfield, Ontario are silhouetted against this spectacular end-of-day. The strong backlighting brings sharp contrast to the gentle waves as they break against the beach. The whole scene has a lovely sense of calm.

I took a walk to look out over Lake Huron on a wonderfully clear morning. The surface of the lake looked so strange with a pattern of areas with ripples caused by a breeze and yet other areas were perfectly calm. Although unseen, it appeared that the breezes were isolated in bands running laterally. It gave the surface of the lake a curious texture as if the lake was no longer flat but undulating. If it wasn't for the fishing boat leaving harbour, you might wonder what you were viewing.

It seems that Lake Huron is well known for the quality of the sunsets from Huron County, at least, as I understand, from a National Geographic article from many years ago. People still mention it. That said, sunset watching from the Bayfield pier, is something of a spectator sport.

As the Sun departs for the day, a lone sailboat leaves Bayfield harbour to give its occupants the best view of the spectacle. What a way to end the day.

It was a late winter day as I overlooked Lake Huron from the cliff at Pioneer Park, in Bayfield, Ontario. The Sun was shining, but there was snow forecast for later in the day. The ice, pushed ashore by the wind, stretched as far as the eye could see. The accumulation of ice on the ends of piers was piled high, the result of early winter storms when the spray would freeze and remain through the winter. But, spring would soon be here and the lake would again be transformed into its more obviously watery self.

A lonely Muskoka (Adirondack) chair sitting on the beach at Bayfield, just as the Sun is about to set. It's the end of another wonderful day at the beach. The warm, late day breezes bring a sense of comfort as you look-out over Lake Huron to view the last vestiges of the day.
