This image was originally captured on film in 1982. There's something about ancient ruins, it's just amazing that they have survived the ravages of time. I don't remember quite what these columns were a part of, a temple or whatever it might have been, but even in their ruin these columns are still quite something. Their majesty is made all the more splendid by the wonderful Mediterranean light.

This image was originally captured on film in 1982. I went to the ancient city of Korinthos in 1972 and then again in 1982. Nothing much had changed. Those ancient monuments had survived another 10 years, and continue to do so. This particular ruin is apparently that of the Temple of Apollo, which, it seems, had many more columns in ancient times. That aside, you have to marvel at the extraordinary architecture, the aesthetics. Even in its ruin, it is such a delight.

Blue &Turquoise Columns

Around Athens are many architectural remnants of the glorious past of Greece, but the greatest of all is the assemblage of temples and the like within the Acropolis complex. This image is of the colonnade at the eastern end of the Erechtheion Those columns have stood there for maybe 2500 years. Remarkable! What I love about this image is the overall duo tone, the marble's orange against the cloudy blue sky.

Incredible Greek Columns on campus at the University of Buffalo, Buffalo, NY

I was in Charleston, West Virginia when I came across the state capitol. What an impressive building. With elements of Greek and Roman architecture, it stood so proud in the early spring light. This panoramic image is the product of three images, stitched together, to make this perspective challenging view of the building.

This is an image of the top of one of the columns on the eastern end of the Erechtheion temple within the Acropolis complex in Athens. Although 2500 years have taken their toll on the ancient marble, it is amazing how much extraordinary detail remains. The Ionic capital at the top of the fluted column retains all of its majestic beauty as it continues in its role of supporting the architrave above.

The elegant and stunning classical architecture of Venice seen through an archway not far from the Rialto Bridge and St Mark's Square. Venice is the capital of the Veneto region of Italy which developed into a city state between the C9th and C12th. It became a major and rich trading city and also developed as a centre for the arts and culture. Digital art developed from my original photograph.

This is an image of the 'North Porch' of the Erechtheion within the Acropolis complex in Athens. It is amazing that something built almost 2500 years ago should still be standing yet alone still have its roof.

If you've ever been in St Peter's Square at the Vatican, you can't help but notice the statues that surround the square. Apparently, there's 140 of them, and all of them of saints. My image limits that number to 13.

The Erechtheionn within the Acropolis complex in Athens is really something to see. It's been decades since you could approach many of the structures that reside within the complex, but no such problem when I was there in 1972; I have a separate picture of me sitting on the stones beneath caryatids, Of course, this is a much more recent image, but today's regimen does mean that there are no pesky tourists in the way when you want to capture an image of this ancient piece of Greek architecture. We had climbed up to the Acropolis early to get ahead of the crowds, a privilege we enjoyed for just a short while. By the time we left, there was a heaving mass of humanity finding its way into every corner of this magnificent place. So, what abou...

It was late in the day as we arrived at the Royal Palace in Phenom Penh; it wouldn't be long before the Sunset. Our timing did give us the advantage of having the place almost to ourselves. To help us around, we hired a guide to show us the highlights. This is an image of the Throne Hall, a pavilion-like structure used for coronations and other royal events. What an incredible building, so ornate and all trimmed with yellow and gold. The roofline is remarkable with tiered gable ends and spires. I really loved the snake-like points on the gables. The lateness in the day created an almost halo-like effect around the building, with the deepest blues approaching the zenith. It was quite the scene.

The Mausoleum of Mohammed V is a historical building located on the opposite side of the Hassan Tower on the Yacoub al-Mansour esplanade in the capital city of Rabat, Morocco.

Within the Athens National Garden is the rather remarkable Zappeion Hall, which was built for the first modern Olympiad in 1896. It's now used as a conference centre. I had walked in through the Greek temple-like entrance, assuming it was a public building, only to be challenged by a security guard. In the spirit of "It's better to beg forgiveness...", I asked if it would be okay to take a few pictures as it was such a stunning place. I got permission, and even a brochure, and was able to get a few images. I have to say the central courtyard was a geometric delight, perfectly circular with two tiers of columns surrounding a gorgeously laid-out chequer-tiled floor. It was quite spectacular. I had to be quick, but I think this image captur...

After the Christchurch Earthquakes, so many buildings were demolished, but for some reason, this one was only partly reduced to its columns and beams. After its underground car park becoming flooded it becoming a nesting ground for rare Black-billed gulls.

Once the main building of the University of Bologna, it currently houses the Archiginnasio Municipal Library

This is an image of the open, outer gallery on the south side of the Angkor Wat temple. The temple is enormous. Although we were there with many hundreds of others, it wasn't difficult to find incredible views, such as this, without another person in sight. Although the temple was built about 900 years ago, it is a remarkable testament to its builders in that it remains an incredible architectural masterpiece today. It is an awe inspiring experience to walk through the complex, one that I won't forget. What I love about this image is the incredible depth; the vanishing point at the far end. Think of the engineering required to build something so straight all those years ago.

The Basel Town Hall /German: Rathaus) is a five hundred years old building dominating the market square in Basel, Switzerland. The Town Hall houses the meetings of the Cantonal Parliament as well as the Cantonal Government of the canton of Basel-Stadt. The Great Council Chamber at one time featured a series of frescoes painted in 1522 by Hans Holbein the Younger, however these have mostly been lost. "Rathaus" literally means "council house" while the term "Roothus" in the local Basel German dialect means both "council house" but also sounds like "red house", a pun with reference to the red sandstone facade of the building.
