Dartmoor Prison in Princetown, Devon, UK HM Prison Dartmoor is a Category C men's prison, located in Princetown, high on Dartmoor in the English county of Devon. Its high granite walls dominate this area of the moor. The prison is owned by the Duchy of Cornwall, and is operated by His Majesty's Prison Service. Dartmoor Prison was given Grade II heritage listing in 1987. The prison, in Princetown, was built in 1806 to hold French prisoners of war during the Napoleonic Wars. Plans to close the prison were announced in 2013, but were later shelved. Celebrating the work of the rangers of Dartmoor in Devon UK

Walking on Dartmoor one Spring a few years ago I was surprised to find an open valley filled with bluebells down to the stream that ran through it. With a granite tor in the background I took this view, and recreated it in oil on board (18 inches x 14 inches). One day I will return to spend a bit more time in this magical, tranquil location. I'd give a precise location, but don't want hordes of people trampling this delicate landscape.

Pew Tor is a magnificant tor that sits high on Whitchurch Common,east of Tavistock, and can be seen from all angles on this part of the moor. The summit consists of three large granite stacks and smaller surrounding stacks. The views are great all around, especially into the Walkham Valley and across to the old railway line at Kings Tor.

When I lived in Devon I painted a lot of local scenes this is one painting I fortunately recorded for you to enjoy in print, canvas or card. Its an abandoned silver mine on the edge of Dartmoor. Dartmoor is a formidable both dangerous and beautiful place. The weather can change within minutes, there are lots of bogs and quicksand that you can get caught in if you don't know the moor. One reason they built a prison there.

The river dart at dartmeet dartmoor rushing over the boulders and stones. Dartmeet is where the west dart and east dart join together hence the name of the place it is a beautiful place to walk.

For Whom Dartmoor Prison Bell Tolls I cannot seem to find out anything about the bell on the second gate into this foreboding prison. Whether they ring it when a new inmate enters or leaves is something I'll do a bit more research on. Dartmoor Tor, National Park, Devon, UK Dartmoor National Park is a vast moorland in the county of Devon, in southwest England. Dartmoor ponies roam its craggy landscape, defined by forests, rivers, wetlands and tors (rock formations). Trails wind through valleys with Neolithic tombs, Bronze Age stone circles and abandoned medieval farmhouses. The Two Moors Way is a long-distance path that runs from Ivybridge in South Devon to Lynmouth on the coast of North Devon, crossing parts of both Dartmoor and Exmoor (and passing into Somerset) along the way. The total length of the trail is about 103 miles (166 km), and some sections are difficult in poor weather.

Postbridge is situated next to the East Dart river, one of two main tributaries of the River Dart. It is best known for a fine example of an ancient clapper bridge over the river.
