From comic book's Golden Era, this cover of Confessions of the Lovelorn is a pop art classic.

Nancy Lewis is at home considering her engagement to Roy Carlson. Roy is a scientist too busy to spend time away from his experiments, even for Nancy. When an unexpected knock sounds on her door, she encounters a man who turns out to be a vampire. He quickly hypnotizes her to gain access to Roy's laboratory. The vampire takes a box of dirt which Roy says is "the perfect soil," similar to the original soil once covering Earth. Roy believes the soil will help mankind, while the vampire plans to use it to permit vampires the ability to gather anywhere and anytime. Roy goes to the vampire's lair to retrieve the box of soil, but he has to survive the rest of the night while fending off the attacks of the League of Vampires until daybreak.

Young Billy Wood received a jetpack Rocket Man and Rocket Girl sent to him. Using his jetpack to fly and fight crime as Rocket Boy, Billy also used it to search for his missing father. After escaping being kidnapped and fighting off natives, Rocket Boy discovered his father was being held captive by Ed Stevens, who wanted to know the location of a diamond mine. When Rocket Boy came to his father's rescue, Stevens released a lion to kill them. Billy tied up the lion and saved his father's life.

Dave Clark was a radio announcer at UMAX but he decided to become a nocturnal crime-fighter, Midnight. His identity was based on a radio character who he voiced at the station when the actor was ill. His assistants included Gabby, a talking monkey, and Doc Wackey, reformed criminal/mad scientist. Later he was aided by Sniffer Snoop, an inept private detective. Midnight had no superpowers, but he was a skilled boxer. He carried several weapons and gadgets including a gun loaded with sleep-darts and a two-way wrist radio. He also carried a vacuum gun which fired a suction cup attached to a line of strong silk.

Marvelo, the "Monarch of Magicians," is a heroic spell-caster who can accomplish almost anything, including intangibility, with a casual flick of the wrist and a few magic incantations. He uses his powers to fight crime and injustice against enemies.

Marine Sergeant Terry Gardner, a former private detective and former champion wrestler, tangles with some Germans, who seek to murder Wilmer, the man Gardner is protecting. A gypsy is killed. The gypsy's parrot, named Snoopy, helps Gardner to avenge his owner's death. Snoopy visits Gardner and inspires him by giving him a card telling him that "At Twilight you will be Master." Thus inspired, Terry buys a costume for himself and begins fighting crime as Twilight.

Stardust the Super Wizard lived on a "private star" far out in space. He patrolled the cosmos fighting criminals, racketeers, and spies. Stardust faced numerous aliens and criminal masterminds including ones such as the Super Fiend who set fire to the planet Mars. He has a vast knowledge of interplanetary science and devotes his abilities to crime-busting. In practical terms, this gives him unlimited, virtually omnipotent powers. He can fly through space using his tubular spatial accelerated super-solar light waves.

Charles (later changed to "Robert") Gibson, a wealthy scientist, was experimenting with electricity and chemicals when lightning struck his lab. The electrical shock caused the lab to explode, but Gibson emerged from the wreckage with a body that could conduct and generate electricity. Swearing to use his powers for the good of humanity, he decided to fight crime as Shock Gibson, the Human Dynamo.

Congo King was a jungle hero in the same mold as Tarzan. He was known only as the Congo King and lived in the jungle with his family which consisted of Tonda, his brunette mate, and Kuta, a blond-haired boy. He was skilled in the use of a knife and also a bow and arrow.

Steve Prentice was a lawyer. After being set up in a murder case, he decided to become like the fabled Pied Piper and draw those criminal rats out of hiding. The Pied Piper had a large and unique collection of flutes with some even having the ability to control the weak minded.

Master marine and adventurer, Typhoon Tyson was skipper of the salvage steamer called the Sea Lion with his first-mate Anzac Peters. His ship was armed with a deck cannon and anti-aircraft guns, perfect for taking out planes and ships.

Lars of Mars was a law enforcement agent of the Supreme Council, the ruling body of Mars. The Council decided to send Lars to Earth as a peacekeeping agent who would stop any possibility to interstellar war by fighting against "forces of evil" that would seek to disrupt the peace. Lars was an athletic man skilled in many edged weapons and firearms. Like other Martians, he had strong lungs that allowed him to survive without oxygen for several minutes.

The Black Phantom was a train robber who worked with a minion named Beast who wielded a bullwhip. She had a twin sister named Jicilla who was a dancer and singer at a saloon as well as a sweetheart to Tim Holt's friend Chito. However when Chito arrives to pick Jicilla up for their date he instead sees her twin Helena in her Black Phantom costume. The Black Phantom orders her men to kill him by dumping him down the well, but Tim Holt sees them carry his friend off and saves him as the Red Mask. While she started her career as an adversary of the western hero Red Mask, she eventually became Red Mask's crime fighting partner.

Dianne Grayton was a wealthy and beautiful young woman who grew bored and decided to become "the most horrible dispenser of justice of all times." She started disguising herself as a classic Halloween witch and using her spiders to scare and punish villains. Her power is to control black widow spiders. She is also athletic and a skilled fighter.

Titan was a private investigator and defender of American freedom, who fought against oppressive forces whether they were ordinary crooks or foreign agents.

While working in his grandfather's antique shop, Tommy Preston finds the Aztec "Heart of Gold," an artifact empowered by “the blood of a thousand martyred Aztecs.” The object gives “strength and courage” to those pure of heart and devoted to justice. Tommy only has to utter the words “Heart of Gold” and gain his powers of super strength, flight and high voltage vision (x-ray vision). The heart's magic also keeps Tommy from being recognized while he is in Golden Lad form.
