Simon Templar, a freelance adventurer, started out robbing from robbers, and later turned to just involving himself in things that he thought might be fun, dangerous, and perhaps even do some good. He came to be called The Saint because of a small stick figure with a halo over his head, he would leave after having struck. He later gave up his thieving ways and just started looking for adventure.

Captain Tootsie was a superhero created to advertise a product. He would always need to consume a Tootsie Roll for a sudden boost of energy in whatever task he needed to perform. He had a sidekick, a boy named Rollo, and two other young cohorts named Fatso and Fisty. The three, along with the Captain himself, made up the Secret Legion.

Torchy's first appearance was as a comic strip in the Fort Hamilton Base newspaper in 1944. Torchy Todd, was the blonde bombshell that all the men loved. She began her long and colorful life mainly as a morale booster for the US Army. She is one of the most risqué comic characters of The Golden Age! Torchy's depiction changed from story to story. Sometimes she was naive and didn't realize the effect she had on men. Other times she understood that effect, but couldn't quite get her head around the reason why she had it. Yet in other stories, Torchy deliberately used her assets to her own advantage.

Zero the Ghost Detective would exterminate evil ghosts by any means necessary. He would also help the ghosts of the innocent to bring their killers to justice. These ghosts were drawn to him, and he was drawn to them. He had no magical abilities but, he did possess an extensive knowledge of occult lore and was the master of many magical artifacts (such as his "Ring of the Moon") and, if that failed, he could fall back on conventional detective work. He was also fairly good at improvising on the spot.

Jack Armstrong, the All-American Boy was a radio adventure series which maintained its popularity from 1933 to 1951. The storylines centered on the globe-trotting adventures of Armstrong, a popular athlete at Hudson High School, his friends Billy Fairfield and Billy's sister Betty, and their Uncle Jim, James Fairfield, an industrialist. In 1936 the Parents Institute began publishing their Jack Armstrong comic book which had a 13-issue run.

Richard Curtis Van Loan is a wealthy socialite who after serving in World War I becomes bored and craves the same level of "excitement" that he became used to in the trenches of the Great War. After being challenged to solve a crime that has baffled the police by his friend Frank Havens, publisher of the New York Clarion, Van Loan finds that he in fact has some ability as a detective. Solving mysteries provides Van Loan with the excitement he craves and so begins the career of the dilettante amateur sleuth, The Phantom Detective.
