James Clerk Maxwell (1831-1879), Scottish physicist. Maxwell's major work was on light and electromagnetic waves. He showed that oscillating charges produced waves in an electromagnetic field, and that these waves had the same velocity as light. This led him to predict other forms of electromagnetic radiation, such as radio waves. He introduced the value 'c' for the speed of light, worked on the motions of molecules in a gas, and showed that Saturn's rings must be composed of numerous particles. The Key West lighthouse is located in Key West, Florida. The original tower was destroyed in a1846 hurricane, and a new lighthouse (seen here) was completed in 1848. It was 50 feet tall with 13 lamps in 21-inch reflectors, and stood about 15 feet above sea level. In 1858 the lighthouse received more lenses, and in 1873 the lantern was replaced after it was damaged by another hurricane in 1866. The growth of trees and taller buildings in Key West began to obscure the light, and in 1894 the tower was raised twenty feet, placing the light about 100 feet above sea level. Kishacoquillas Valley Railroad. Steam locomotive at a stop as it hauls an NRHS (National Railway Historical Society) excursion train on the Kishacoquillas Valley Railroad, Pennsylvania, USA. Here, it has halted in Lewistown. The locomotive, numbered 2082, is the D16sb model of the PRR D16 class of steam locomotive. Locomotive 2082 was in use on this railroad from 1936 to 1940. The Kishacoquillas Valley Railroad, a small country line, operated for 47 years from 1893 to 1940, running the 15 kilometres from Belleville to Reedsville. This photograph, from the collection of David H. Cope (1913-2001), was taken on 1 August 1937.
