The stone bridge (No. 220) crossing the Oxford Canal at Shipton-on-Cherwell. This is one of the stone 'Brindley' bridges named after James Brindley the original supervising engineer of the canal. In front is a single lock gate. This is a 'stop lock' for isolating part of the canal for mainenance or if there is a danger of flooding. The bridge connects the village of Shipton on the right with farmland on the left as we view it. From here the canal continues through Thrupp to Oxford itself.

'Nice Item' - an aptly named narrowbooat moored up against the Thames Path at Lechlade, Gloucestershire. This is about as far upstram as you can get on the thames as after Lechlade it becomes narrower and shallower! In the background is the parish church of St Lawrence at Lechlade its spire being a local landmark. Lechlade is at the southern tip of the Cotswolds and is very close to the Oxfordshire border. This image has added textures in the style of an oil painting.

The Kennet and Avon Canal as it passes through the town of Newbury in Berkshire. This image, captured during an afternoon in early February is just upstream from the Town Lock. On the right is the site of West Mills reminding us that Newbury was a centre for agriculture and for textile manufacture. The canal itself was constructed between 1794 and 1810 to provide smooth transport between Bristol and London via Reading. It was fully restored from the mid 1900s, being fully reopened in 1990. A digital drawing of a narrowboat moored on the Thames riverbank at Henley in Oxfordshire. On the opposite bank is Rod Eyot (or Ait), an island in mid-river with several chalets and a brick cottage - only accessible by boat! Further downstrem is the town of Henley itself most noted for its annual Royal Regatta which attracts top rowers from all over the world. The Thames Path against which the boat is moored is a long-distance National trail leading from the Cotswolds to London.

Here in a convenient 'winding hole' giving space freo a 72' narrow boat to turn round, The village, and notably the parish church of St Mary is reflected in the canal's still waters on an autumn afternoon. The canal passes through the village via Kintbury Lock. Next to it the Great Western Railway, which caused the decline of the canal as a commercial waterway, makes its way to and from London.

This lovely old boat is almost a floating garden with containers of plants on the deck! The image was captured on a walk along the Thames Path just above Henley. Across the river is the Berkshire bank of the river. After a sunny day it's now clouding over!

The Kennet and Avon Canal at Aldermaston Wharf in West Berkshire. Beautifully peaceful now but once this was a hive of industry. After the completion of the canal in 1810, trade and commerce increased and a community grew up here which included all-important carpenters who serviced the locks and bridges. The Wharf would have seen exports of timber and agricultural produce and the import of coal, groceries and manufactured goods. However, with the coming of the railway canal trade declined.

Here the Kennet Navigation is about to become the Kennet and Avon Canal taking boats to Bath and Bristol. To the right is Newbury's Town Lock taking boats eastwards to Reading and the Thames.

A digital art view of the Thames Path as it wends its way towards the village of Goring-on-Thames in Oxfordshire. The Thames Path is a national long distance trail 184 miles (296 km) long which starts at Kemble in Gloucestershre near one of the attributed sources at Thames Head (the other being Seven Springs). It finishes at the Thames Barrier flood defence in London. Here it passes through the Goring Gap - a narrow space between the North Wessex (Berkshire) Downs and the Chiltern Hills.

A narrowboat negotiating the lift bridge at Aldermaston Wharf on the Kennet and Avon Canal in Berkshire. This hydraulically powered bridge was built in 1981 to replace a swing bridge. It carries the A340 on its way from the A4 to Basingstoke, Hampshire, via the village of Aldermaston. The Wharf is peaceful enough now but once it was a hive of industry and there would have been many working boats loading and unpoading their cargoes here. A narrowboat moored on the banks of the Thames at Lechlade in Gloucestershire on an overcast afternoon, close to the Oxfordshire border and right at the southernmost tip of the Cotswolds. Here we are also at the highest navigable point of the river - St John'sLlock just below this scene being the first (or last) to navigate. Just further upstream the river becomes narrower and shallower - the river looking very little like the mighty Thames flowing through London!

The Town Lock at Newbury in West Berkshire on a sunny autumn day. This is the view as you join the towpath on the western side of Town Bridge (or The Water Bridge). Here the Kennet divides, the left fork heading to the old West Mills (now housing) whilst steer right to take you through the lock and onwards towards Bath and Bristol. The lock itself dates from 1796 and is Grade 2 listed. It has a rise/fall of 3ft 6in (0.07m).

A sudden flurry of activity on an autumn afternoon at Kintbury Lock on the Kennet and Avon Canal in West Berkshire. A boat has just emerged from the lock to carry on travelling upstream towards Newbury, Bath and Bristol, passing moored boats on the way. The waterway passes through the village here - almost through the centre! Tranquil now but once a hive of industrial activity with working boats carrying such goods as Bath stone for the grand buildings in London.

Plenty of activity at Lock 93, Heale's Lock, on the Kennet and Avon Canal just above Woolhampton in Berkshire, England. One narrow boat, heading downstream is waiting whilst another, coming upstream is locking through.This lock was built between 1718 and 1723 under the supervision of engineer John Hore of Newbury. Originally a turf-sided lock it was rebuilt in brick when the canal was being restored in the 1980s. After many years of neglect,The Kennet and Avon was fully reopened in 1990.

Pewsey Wharf on the Kennet and Avon Canal in Wiltshire, England. This is in the heart of the beautiful Vale of Pewsey. The canal reached here in 1810 when the wharf would have been a hive of industrial activity. However, the construction of the Great Western Railway which arrived at Pewsey in 1862 meant that the canal gradually fell into disuse. Having become derelict by the mid 1900s, a restoration programme was put in place and the canal was at last fully reopened to traffic in 1990. Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200

The tranquil view from the towpath near the Weavers Cottages in West Mills, Newbury belies the once-bustling corn mills powered by the River Kennet. Hovis bought the mill in 1921, which was then sold in the 1950s. The tall granary building across the river stands as a testament to its industrial history. The swing bridge on the right leads to the town centre, while the mill's sluice gates can be seen on the left. The reflections of the mill buildings and trees on the calm water of the Kennet and Avon Canal.

Hungerford Wharf on the Kennet and Avon Canal in West Berkshire, seen from the towpath on the town bank of the waterway. Always a good place for the local ducks as they often get fed here! This was captured on a bright sunny day in late November, A peaceful scene now, but in the past this would have been a hive of industry with canal boats loading and unloading goods such as Bath stone for building, agricultural produce and equipment, coal and general goods.

A narrowboat passing through the lower gates of Aldermaston Lock on the Kennet and Avon Canal in the late afternoon. The lock is at Aldermaston wharf, a mile or so north of Aldermaston village in West Berkshire. Now peaceful, the Wharf was once a hive of activity with boats being loaded and unloaded with coal, building stone, agricultural implements and foodstuffs. An impresisionist style photograph of the Kennet and Avon Canal from the Station Road Footbridge at Hungerford in West Berkshire. This was captured just before Christmas on a frosty morning. Behind us is the Town Bridge and Hungerford Wharf. Ahead of us the waterway flows through Newbury before carrying on to Reading where it meets the Thames.

Looking westwards from beneath the canal bridge over the Kennet and Avon at Pewsey in Wiltshire,England. An artist has set up his easel and is capturing the scene in watercolours. Along the north bank narrowboats are moored whilst the towpath winds alongside the canal's southern side. This K & A canal was constructed between 1794 and 1810, this section being completed in 1810. The Kennet and Avon Canal at Aldermaston Wharf in West Berkshire. Beautifully peaceful now with a visitors' centre and teashop but once this was a hive of industry! The scene would have been busy with the wide Kennet boats loading and unloading their cargoes of farm goods, coal, building stone etc. Here were also the carpenters so necessary for maintaining the locks and bridges as well as forges for shoeing the boats' horses. Now a boat yard services leisure craft.

The weir at Streatley-on-Thames in West Berkshire as seen from the road bridge linking this village with Goring-on-Thames on the northern, Oxfordshire bank. This weir is a few hundred yards below the much longer one at Goring. Where the houses in the image now stand is the site of Streatley Mill which was destroyed by fire in 1926 n- although paintings and early photographs of it still exist. The hills behind are the start of the North Wessex (or Berkshire) Downs.

The Town Bridge, or as it is known locally, The Water Bridge, crossing the Kennet and Avon Canal in the centre of Newbury in Berkshire, England. The River Kennet was made navigable from Reading to Newbury in the early 1700s under the supervision of the engineer John Hore of Newbury, work commencing in 1718. It was extended further west to Hungerford in 1798. The bridge probably dates from this period. The canal was finally opened to connect with Bristol in 1810.

In the background is the bridge over the river taking road traffic towards Maidenhead in Berkshire. It dates from 1786 and is a Grade 1 listed historical structure. On the opposite (Remenham) bank is the world famous Leander Rowing Club. Founded in 1818 it's one of the oldest rowing clubs in the world and the oldest non-academic one.

I have nothing against swimming in salt water or sharks I actually love both. But I must say for people who are not fans of sharks this is one of the major pros of the great lakes and lake superior will always hold a special place in my heart as my first Great Lake.

The Kennet and Avon Canal as it makes its way westwards out of Newbury in West Berkshire. Here it joins with the River Kennet which at one time provided the water to power the corn and woollen mills along here. Newbury was renowned for its woollen industry and just ahead here is a row of weavers' cottages from the earlier days of cottage industry. The canal was used to transport wool, woollen goods as well as other commodities east to London via the Thames or west to Bath and Bristol.

The scene walking by the lock at Goring-on-Thames in Oxfordshire. This side of the lock has a profusion of flowers whilst on the island, next to the lock keeper's cottage, are neat gardens. In the background the river rushes through the weir before flowing onward to Pangbourne and Reading. At this point the Thames passes between the Chiltern Hills and the North Wessex Downs - this is known as the Goring Gap.

The lock keeper's cottage at Goring-on-Thames in Oxfordshire. Situated where the Thames flows between the north Wessex (Berkshire) Downs and the Chiltern Hills known as the Goring Gap. The first lock here was a flash lock with paddles instead of gates. The first pound lock was constructed in 1787 using oak. The rather fine lock keeper's cottage dates from 1879, just before the lock was rebuilt in 1886. The last rebuild was in 1921 with a refit in 2003.

A busy scene at Heale's Lock, no.93, on the Kennet and Avon Canal near Woolhampton in Berkshire, England. This lock was originally constructed as a turf sided lock between 1718 and 1723 under the supervision of the engineer John Hore of Newbury. It was rebuilt with brick sides in the late 1980s when the canal was undergoing complete restoration.The K&A was built between 1794 and 1810 to link the Kennet and Avon rivers, providing a smooth transport link between Bristol and London via Reading.

This peaceful backwater is immediately next to the rushing waters of Benson weir on the River Thames in Oxfordshire. This was photographed in late August and the lush green foliage rather belies the hot, dry weather we had experienced durung the summer! The image was taken from the Thames Path which, if coming from Wallingford, has just passed over the lock and weir at Benson. Carrying on to the left we reach a riverside cafe and bistro - just right for refreshments before the return walk!

This elegant footbridge, No. 83, crosses over the Kennet and Avon Canal is at Hungerford in Berkshire, England. It's found to the east and just downstream of the town's wharf and road bridge, In the early to mid 19th century the canal was once busy with commercial traffic transporting goods such as Bath stone for the grand buildings then springing up in the area. The canal, 87 miles long, was constructed between 1794 and 1810 to provide a link between Bristol and London avoiding the rough roads.
