The River Thames as seen from the north bank at Benson in Oxfordshire. Here we are just above the weir and lock - seen in the background and are just next door to The Waterside cafe and bistro - a lovely place to sit and look at the river. Benson is as well known perhaps for its RAF station just across the main road from here. A walk across the weir and lock along the Thames Path takes us to the ancient market town of Wallingford.

Behind us the river flows on to Wallingford where this walk started - and ahead is the town of Abingdon and the city of Oxford. However, immediately ahead on this walk is a riverside bistro - a lovely place to sit and relax with a coffee and pastry before retracing our steps.

Approaching Sulhamstead Lock on the Kennet and Avon Canal in Berkshire. It was originally constructed between 1718 and 1723 under the direction of the engineer John Hore from nearby Newbury and has a rise and fall of 4ft 1 inch. The canal was designed to join the Avon and Kennet rivers allowing goods to be transported between Bristol and London via Reading. It fell into disuse in the early 20th century but was restored later in the century and is now busy with leisure boats.

A walk along the towpath of the Kennet and Avon Canal at Newbury, Berkshire. It's early spring: the trees are just beginning to bud and the boats moored alonside the bank are getting ready for the summer. This section of the canal began its construction in 1718 under the supervision of engineer John Hore of Newbury and in 1724 the length between Reading and Newbury was opened. The entire canal from Reading to Bristol was completed in 1810 allowing goods to be transported from Bristol to London. Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200

The Kennet and Avon Canal at Kintbury in West Berkshire. This is the view looking eastwards from the bridge towards Kintbury Lock on an autumn afternoon. Carry on eastwards from here and you eventually reach Reading and the River Thames, Behind us the canal continues through Berkshire and Wiltshire to reach Bath and Bristol.

Canal boats moored above the lock on the Kennet and Avon Canal at Aldermaston, West Berkshire. This image was captured on a sunny February afternoon. The buildings by the lock were once the Aldermaston Brewery established in 1770. In 1833 it was bought by Thomas Strange whose family owned it until it ceased production in 1945. A footbridge crossing the Kennet and Avon Canal in Berkshire produced as an impressionist painting. The ramps each side are so that the horses pulling the boats along the canal could cross to the towpath on the opposite bank. The canal, 87 miles long, was constructed between 1794 and 1810 to link the Thames and Avon rivers, providing a smooth transport link between Bristol and London via Reading. Restored during the late 1900s it was fully re-opened for traffic in 1990.

Autumnal reflections in the waters of the Kennet and Avon Canal (Kennet Navigation) just above Midgham Lock in West Berkshire. Here a wide boat is moored next to the towpath. Follow the path and we reach Thatcham and Newbury before carrying on to Bath and Bristol. Behind us, below the lock, we reach Woolhampton and eventually Reading and the Thames.

The scene as the Kennet and Avon Canal approaches the western end of Newbury in West Berkshire. This area, West Mills, was once a hive of activity where wool and woollen products were loaded and unloaded to and from canal boats to be transported to London via the Thames at Reading or to Bristol and its docks to be exported abroad. Now warehouses and workshops have been reaplaced by or converted into flats and houses and the boats are for leisure.

The canal was the brainchild of the engineer James Brindley who died before the start of construction. It was designed to link Coventry and its coalfields with Oxford, the Thames and London, transporting coal and other goods from the Midlands. Approaching the bottom gate of Sulhamstead lock on the Kennet and Avon Canal in Berkshire, England. The lock was originally constructed between 1718 and 1723 under the supervision of the engineer John Hore from Newbury. The lock has a rise and fall of 1.25 metres (4ft 1inch) The Kennet and Avon was designed to link the rivers Kennet in the east and Avon in the west so that goods could be transported from Bristol to London. It was completely renovated in the late 1900s.

The traditional morkoro canoes are cut from trees which take 100 years to grow and they are unusable after 10 years. The practice now is to replace old canoes with plastic ones for a more sustainable environment.

Just upstream from Caversham Bridge, swans regularly gather in the hope of food - which is always forthcoming! The bridge spans the River Thames linking Reading and Caversham. The first bridge here was built c1163. During the Civil War a skirmish on the bridge resulted in the Reading side being rebuilt with a wooden drawbridge. This was later painted on canvas by JMW Turner. The present bridge dates from 1926. Swans and geese are a feature here as they gather by the Reading Rowing Club boathouse

A pleasure boat taking sightseers on a trip along the River Thames. Here it's passing the boathouses on the Caversham riverbank at Reading, Berkshire. This is a busy stretch of the Thames with boats such as this often negotiating their way through racing crews in training, private launches, canoeists and the ever-present flocks of swans and geese! A narrowboat moored next to a restaurant, once a watermill, on the banks of the Thames at Maidenhead in Berkshire. Just behind us the river passes through Boulters Lock, the subject of paintings especially in Victorian and Edwardian times. This is Ray Mill Island and in the background a new footbridge leads over the river to Taplow. A lovely place to stop for refreshment on your journey along this beautiful river.
