Australia is the home to some of the most unique, unusual, and simply strange creatures. This is certainly one of them! Along with the Platypus, Echidnas are the only egg-laying mammals in the world, known as monotremes. While enjoying a bush-walking trail in the Springbrook National Park (on the border of Queensland and New South Wales states of Australia), I was so lucky to encounter a real wild Echidna - a rare sight. This ink drawing was inspired by the encounter.

The Echidna was sure there were bugs in this old log - so he rolled it over with his head and broke into it with his claws. Taken at Healesville Sanctuary in Victoria, Australia.

The Platypus is a semi-aquatic mammal that lays eggs. The only other existing egg laying mammals are Echidnas. The Platypus is found only in eastern Australia and Tasmania. They spend much of their time in the water, hunting for worms, insect larvae, shrimp, and crayfish. The Platypus hunts for its food by sensing the electric field created by the movement of its prey. As is true for many animals of Australia, there is evidence that the Platypus is at risk of extinction from climate change, increasing periods of drought, and loss of its environment due to development.
