The Lady of December bears the white Narcissus and dons the stone of Turquoise. The white Narcissus celebrates fertility and resurrection while the Turquoise shall bring her prosperity and good fortune. She ushers in the beginning of Winter’s reign. St. Lucia - John Bauer, advent In Nordic culture, on the winter solstice the locals would have bonfires to ward off spirits. With the coming of Christianity, St. Lucia took the place of the solstice. "Evergreen Lady" is a painting created for my Spirits of Winter series. Originally rendered in watercolor, ink, and gold leaf. In dark times, we must hold on to a sliver of warmth and light. Evergreens remind us of the eternal quality of our persistence. The darkness will end come the daybreak of hope.

The feast of Santa Lucia, is celebrated on December 13th. Although Lucia was an Italian saint, this is traditionally celebrated in Sweden. The oldest daughter will bring sweets and goodies to her neighbors and loved ones. She wears a wreath of candles atop her head, bearing light in the dark winter.
