These striking deep blue berries on bright red stocks, caught my attention while out hiking. It was a wet November day while I was out walking. The contrast of the bright colours among the seasonal brown vegetation is part of the joy of outdoor discoveries. There is always something new! This is alternate-leaf dogwood, (Comus alternifolia). Native to eastern North America, found along moist woods and stream banks in the Northeastern US and Canada. Alternate-leaf dogwood berries are a favourite food of summer songbirds and ruffed grouse.
