The biggest bird in North America was at one point almost lost to the world. By the late 1980's, only 21 California Condors existed. Their population had plummeted from habitat loss, hunting, and lead poisoning. This bird was ignored, hated, and decimated because it was considered ugly, unimportant, and in the way of societal progress. But today, despite all odds, California Condors soar above the Big Sur region of California and the Grand Canyon in Arizona. There is beauty in these majestic birds that command the skies despite everything that has been thrown at them. The California Condor was almost extinct. So I was suprised to see one this close on my move out West!!! My first time in Zion National Park on my way to live in California I saw this bird in silouhette! It was a magical experience and so is the desert! Perfect for hikers, bird watchers, and Zion lovers.

The California condor (Gymnogyps californianus) is a New World vulture and the largest North American land bird. It became extinct in the wild in 1987 when all remaining wild individuals were captured, but has since been reintroduced to northern Arizona and southern Utah (including the Grand Canyon area and Zion National Park), the coastal mountains of California, and northern Baja California in Mexico. It is the only surviving member of the genus Gymnogyps, although four extinct members of the genus are also known. The species is listed by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature as Critically Endangered, and similarly considered Critically Imperiled by NatureServe.

The California condor (Gymnogyps californianus) is a species of large, endangered soaring bird native to the western United States. It is one of the largest flying land birds in North America, with an average wingspan of nearly 10 feet. Although the condor once ranged from British Columbia to Mexico, by 1982 its population had been reduced to just 22 individuals, all of which were captured and placed in a captive breeding program.

Big Sur Condor

California Condors were almost extinct in the 80's! Thanks for conservation efforts they now number in the several hundreds and have been released back into the wild! I got to see one in Zion when I moved to California and thought it was a pretty good omen. Show your love for this endangered bird with a sticker or tote!
