Description: This is an image of the tall Gothic-arched windows in the Lady Chapel adjacent to Ely Cathedral, in Cambridgeshire, England. The intricate tracery allows natural light to flood into chapel's interior. The architecture showcases the ornate stonework and a majestic sense of space. Built in the 14th century, the chapel sits next to the cathedral. When we were there, it looked as if they were setting up for a choral presentation, which only shows that if you build something that is truly useful, those who follow will look after it, even after 700 years.
Description: This image is of Saint Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna, Austria. I was really taken with the magnificent roof with its zigzagging stripped tiles of green, grey, black, and even some yellow. What a lot of work to construct such a roof, but also look a what it sits atop: the Romanesque tower and the Gothic elements. A stunning piece of medieval architecture.
Description: I have a love of medieval cathedrals; they speak so natively to the deep faith of the people who laboured so long ago to create such spectacular places of worship. Peterborough Cathedral, in England, is such a place. This image is of the incredible fan-vaulted ceiling of the "New Building" that was added beyond the apse during the early 1500s. I understand that as an architectural style, fan-vaulting was an English style, which emerged during the 14th century. It is quite something. What I love about this image is the strong converging verticals leading up to the conoidal fans, and the delicate illumination from lead-lighted windows on the limestone vaults. You gotta love it!

Description: On July 22, 1968, the cathedral was damaged by a fire that destroyed many of the structure's features and contents, including the rose window, vestments, 1860 bells, and parish records. Only the facade and the walls of the old church remained. In 1972, a new, smaller cathedral was built incorporating the back wall, which was directly behind where I stood to take this photograph. Description: "Historic Facade of Saint Boniface Cathedral Winnipeg" During a summer visit to Winnipeg, I stopped to photograph the striking facade of Saint Boniface Cathedral. The preserved stone front, all that remained after a 1968 fire, now stands before the modern cathedral built behind it, creating a remarkable blend of history, resilience, and architectural beauty. A dramatic summer sky adds to the timeless character of this iconic landmark. Description: This is an image of the ceiling over the nave in Ely Cathedral, in Cambridgeshire, England. I love the symmetry; it really is remarkable that craftsmen, all those centuries ago, could have created something so geometrically perfect. The cathedral is the product of endeavours over several centuries, the oldest parts are from the 11th century, but its history through some of the greatest social upheavals in British history, bear testament to its ongoing social importance.
