Description: ✪✪✪ The order was formed c. 1119 CE when seven knights, led by a French nobleman from Champagne, Hugh of Payns, swore to defend Christian pilgrims in Jerusalem and the Holy Land and so created a brotherhood who took monastic vows and lived together in a closed community. In 1120 CE Baldwin II, the king of the Kingdom of Jerusalem (r. 1118-1131 CE), gave the knights his palace, the former Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount of Jerusalem, for use as their headquarters. The building was commonly referred to as ‘The Temple of Solomon' and so the brotherhood quickly became known as ‘the Order of the Knights of the Temple of Solomon' or simply the ‘Templars’.

Holy Island has a recorded history from the 6th century AD; it was an important centre of Celtic Christianity under Saints Aidan, Cuthbert, Eadfrith, and Eadberht of Lindisfarne. Description: This is an image of the castle on the tidal island of Lindisfarne (Holy Island), which sits off the coast of Northumberland. The island has had a turbulent past with raids by the Vikings and being in the volatile "Borders" region between England and Scotland. Access to the island is via a causeway that floods twice a day, so you have to time your visit accordingly. The approach to the castle is quite dramatic as the mound upon which it sits is the highest point on an otherwise very flat landscape. We were told that the rocky outcrop was all that remains of a long extinct volcano. Being so elevated, it offered a strategic advantage to those who might have defended it. But what do you do with a castle when there's no more need for a castle, w

Description: This is an image, in part, of the ruins of the priory on Lindisfarne (Holy Island), which is off the northwest coast of England. The island is tidal and connected to the mainland by a causeway, which floods twice a day. The ruins date from the establishment of the priory by the Normans, following the "Conquest", but the site had previously been that of a monastery with a history that goes back to the mid-7th century. The original monastery was destroyed during the Viking raids. The stone arches and walls are all that remains of the old priory, but these ruins hint at the grand architecture from that bygone era.
