Sited atop the volcanic mound known as Beblowe Craig, Lindisfarne Castle is one of the most distinct and picturesque features of the Holy Island, Northumberland, England and can be seen for many miles around. Following the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII, it was built in 1550 in defence of the realm against attack by Scotland and in persuit of their Spanish allies. Constructed of stone taken from the Priory the most interesting recent feature (1997) has been the re-facing of north-facing walls which featured the use of Yak hair in the render. The castle is excellently maintained by the National Trust and the view from the top truly magnificent - it is also unique. BEST VIEWED LARGER

Lindisfarne or Holy Island as it is often referred to is located just off the Northumberland Coastline and is only accessible by road via a causeway that is visible at low tide. A small island containing a fishing harbour and a castle, it holds a prominent position in the religious heritage of the area. When on the island, looking west to the mainland, if lucky, you witness some great sunsets.

The Holy Island of Lindisfarne Lindisfarne Castle is a 16th-century castle located on Holy Island, near Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland, England, much altered by Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1901. The island is accessible from the mainland at low tide by means of a causeway. ✪✪✪ The order was formed c. 1119 CE when seven knights, led by a French nobleman from Champagne, Hugh of Payns, swore to defend Christian pilgrims in Jerusalem and the Holy Land and so created a brotherhood who took monastic vows and lived together in a closed community. In 1120 CE Baldwin II, the king of the Kingdom of Jerusalem (r. 1118-1131 CE), gave the knights his palace, the former Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount of Jerusalem, for use as their headquarters. The building was commonly referred to as ‘The Temple of Solomon' and so the brotherhood quickly became known as ‘the Order of the Knights of the Temple of Solomon' or simply the ‘Templars’.
