Celtic Cross, June 2019 The Celtic cross is a symbol of Christianity, common in Britain and Ireland in the Early Middle Ages, especially in regions evangelised by Irish missionaries during the 9th to 12th centuries AD . This example can be found in a woodland garden on a country estate near Bodmin (Cornwall, England) and is almost certainly the cross head only, originally it would have been mounted on a much taller column. Common Whitetail Dragonfly by Debra Martz The Common Whitetail dragonfly is seen across much of North America, with a striking and unusual appearance. The male's chunky white body (about 2 inches long), combined with the brownish-black bands on its translucent wings, give it a checkered look. The white on the abdomen, found only in mature males, is displayed to other males as a territorial threat. Common chicory flowers, also known as blue sailors, coffeeweed, or succory-- and sometimes mistaken for cornflowers, blooms at the edge of a field. Basking in the brilliant summer sunlight, fluttering in the breeze, and showing their pistols and stamen in sharp detail, one of these lovely blue blossoms glows almost iridescent white in the sunlight as the other turns away in shadow.
